RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
Scott I used to fly one with a G-26. You could point it straight up and it would keep on going till it was a dot in the sky. It was a really fun plane. Thought about getting another one since I still have the engine.

Wondering how you ran the spark plug connection from the ignition module to the plug? Did you feed it thru the hole in the firewall, or cut a hole in top of the fuse?

On mine I used a .500dia dremel sanding drum and removed about .500" of plywood in front of the fuel tank compartment [center]and than glue apiece of "FOURMOST COCKPIT COAMING" to protect the lead. I than mounted my CDI ignition module on the cover center and aft,the lead now "goose necks" out and to the engine.Sorry I can post photo's at work and I'm here until 11:00pm to night, but I will try to post some photo's soon. Bruce go back to my post #346 on page 14 and look how mine is. He did more or less the same thing but instead of cutting a slot like me he removed more plywood from the bottom and put some rubber trim around it. I have the plastic wrap on mine plus not shown in the picture is I later wrapped the lead with some 1/16" rubber splicing tape so the plywood bottom cannot wear into the plastic wrap.

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
ok guys thanks. I mounted my engine upright. also, the muffler is at rear of the engine. On my engine, the plug wire is going to fit between two stacks coming from the "muffler" a hollow can. looks like its going to be a noisey beast. Think that I am going to make a hole out the top of the fuse for plug wire, and then dress up the opening so it does not look to bad.
thanks for the info

Did you guys beef the frame up any? Did you off set the motor to the left? It looks like a big off set, wondering why? Got most of my parts in to complete the build, time to get back at it. I went with Savox servos and power will be a EME 35cc.
Thanks,
Bill

Well I must say that I read upon this site about the plane, took a lot of notes that I had learned like useing heavier hinges, made my own carbon fiber pushrods which wasn't cheap. Just reall invested a lot of time on this plane but it was not to be as I had a radio malfunction on its maiden flight, 1-1/2 mins into the flight at mid throttle the radio drops contact with the receiver, I only blame the radio becouse I ended up loosing a 2nd plane later that day.

Scott so sorry, I had that happen to my big Ultra Stick several years ago, full throttle from 200 ft. straight down into asphalt. Not good, a total loss of everything including the 26 cc engine. I Just had to watch it happen.

I use the marked out positions and no the frame has had no extra support added. I am in the process of putting on new landing gear as the origional is a little light and I am tired of having to bend it back in place. I just replaced the 40 cc with a 50 cc, there is no weight penalty so what the heck! Haven't flown it yet.

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
Finally made the maiden flight on my GUS today with DLE 35. Perfect match for this airframe, plenty of power and CG was good using the stock stand-offs. Used aft tank position and used batteries to bring it to balance. No reinforcements to airframe made and as far as I can see, none needed. Plane is a hoot to fly and landings with half/full flap brought a smile to my old face. This one will have a place in my stable for a long time!

I replaced the gear as it had the habit of spreading and was a little short for a 20 in. prop. A friend had one that was taller and heavier that works out well for me...

Hi. Did you put the servos in the stock locations or move them up front? I am using the same DLE-35RA and will be building within the next week. Thanks ahead for any info.

hogshead ...... wondering how your DLE35 pulls this plane? I am assembling one also. Its about ready to balance and give a try. the plane is so large and heavy, I have been wondering if MY DLE 35 was going to be enough. I Like lots of power. How is your verticle performance? Maybe is should throw the 35 in a corner and put on my DL 50!

Yup. I like the Syssa 30cc on mine. It's a very light engine but gives the plane gobs of excess power.
A 35cc sounds perfect too.
Dunno about a 50cc though. That sounds like too much.

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
aa2dd, the DLE 35 pulls the GUS very well. Can't imagine wanting any more engine than the 35. I'm no 3-der by any means but you can pull the nose straight up after take off and climb to your hearts content. It will also hold itself in a hover at about half throttle. All servos were per the manual, two in the rear for rudder/elevator, throttle servo in the tray with receiver, tank in the rear position under the wing leading edge. I used a 5 cell 2400 Nicd in the nose for receiver power and used a 2000 Nimh mounted on the tray for ignition power. Ignition box is in the nose also.
