Seagull Models Edge 540
I was wondering if anyone knows how this plane flys and anything about it before I buy it. I was going to get the Aeroworks 60/90 arf, but I found this one that is $100 cheaper. The only real difference I have found in them is that the Seagull is not the 2 seater version. The wing span is only 1/4 inch difference. Let me know if you have any info on this model or even the company. A link is provided to view the plane.
Thanks,
~Conrad

But the real question is does it fly $100 worse? Anybody got one? Seagull definitely looks cool. Hopefully it'll fly well. I think Hanger 9 rebrands a couple of models as well. Wonder why Horizon doesn't bring them all in.
They are made in Vietnam, wonder how they compare to the other ARFs made out there (like VQ and VMAR)?

we fly several seagull models and this includes one of the new edge540's, it has big control surfaces for 3d and the quality and looks are great. seagull planes have improved greatly over the past few years and we seen and experienced it first hand, marvelous value.

hello......the wing joins the traditional way........epoxy and a dihedral brace............the section of fuselage just above the wing , unbolts and sandwiches the wing...4 wing bolts secure the wing....the assembly book is pretty basic....not alot of detail.....the saito 100 is a very powerful motor and should pull vertical forever...i have a saito 100 on a scratch built beaver, that i bought from a friend that is almost 2 lbs heavier then the 540..........it has unlimited vertical....thanks .pault
edit: check out horizonhobby.com....click on edge 540..60 arf...under hot products....pault

Unlimited vertical
Does anyone have any first-hand experience as to the vertical performance of this plane with a Saito 100(or similar 4-strokes). What throttle % will it hover. I will be learning hovering on this plane and want plenty of extra "oomph" to pull the plane out of failed hover attempts.
Any more general comments on quality/performance? How is the covering job/included hardware? Do you need hi-torque servos? Where are the servos located?
Thanks guys, this plane looks sweet, I think it gonna be my next plane(after my Sig Somethin' Extra met an untimely demise on 2nd flight; reciever failure!!!! )

interesting quote the last one, the elevator broke whilst hovering this sounds weird, very little load on the elevator, elevators normally fail when diving at full speed and then pulling up and most of the time you will hear the flutter before failure . about the %throttle at hover with a saytoe(saito) 100 about 60% and it will then go straight up on full off-coarse depends on prop size etc. we are now putting in a 120 2/stroke we need more. will post more on 3d after flight. covering is excellent, hardware fine but we always upgrade to dubro/greatplane hardware, we don't loose 200$+ planes for 1$ hardware and this goes for all our planes, we also always use the best servos we can afford same principal as on hardware applies, we have 2servos in tail, rudder is pull pull from cockpit also throttle with 2 in wing.

Q8 - Could you supply any specifics on the breakage? Was it the elevator(control surface) or the stab? What maneuver were you doing? Full throttle? Any mods to the plane? Any input would be greatly appreciated

edge
can anyone who owns one of these tell me what the real finished weight is?, I too would like to try one for 3-D with a saito 100 but I think it would need to weigh less than 8lbs. to do a good job. Thanks. Randy

we have flown it with a saito100, a91fx and yes will try the 120/2s in a week or so and we will put rear carbon strengtheners just in case.
it really flew well with both the other engines but for real 3d you need lots.

Elevator servo offset
Adrian: I just bought one, have not started it yet. The pre-cut holes for the elevator servos are offset, one is further back than the other and higher on the fuse. Looks like the pushrods will be at different angles to the control horns, one almost 90 degrees, the other more like 60 degrees.
Did you use the pre-cut holes, and if so did you have to add any differential to get the elevator halves to move in sync? With different angles the mechanical advantage will not be equal and I would think that would be evident during hard loops.
Thanks

Hey, what do you think of the SuperTiger G-2300? Too much? It has 3.7hp! But, it is a brick, weighing 37.8oz. What do ya think?
It pretty cheap for this kind of power.

adrian, you said that you have two servos in the tail? Are you using two for the elevator? Do you need to do this if you use one high torque?

yes, use good bb/mg servos like the hi-tec 424bbmg or eq, using one always sets you up with equalizing problems and many more problems in flight. we have over time had many problems with uneq tail so we modify all our bigger planes with servos in tail on our small cap(sc61engine) we have just fitted two hi-tec 81mg servos the cap had problems even at fast takeoff, now its great even on very tight loops etc,
your radio is great for this not so,
ps. make sure to have one control arm up other down if you use a y-connector also eq lenths of arm retains same output, unless your radio has a reverse function for each servo then with epa equalize

that super tiger was bench mark for a long time-now we just remember it. app st engines are no made in china so well wait and see, we still have some Italian g51's 45's and so on still great engines we also have some of the new ching engines like sc /acp and have been very impressed with how they work, perform and so far last.
