Best Engine for Ultra Stick 60
Hello I an building an Ultra Stick 60 with aelierons and flaps.
I am basically a sport flyer.
I am looking for suggestions for an engine. I was thinking MDS 78 but I am un sure if this will be enough power.
I do not care if the engine is two or four stroke as I have both.
I want to make sure I have enough power to really enjoy this airplane.
All suggestions and why will be very helpfull.
Thank you
Brian

RE: Best Engine for Ultra Stick 60
Good Morning Brian!
I fly the Hanger 9 Ultra Stick 60 on a GMS 76 2-stroke (with a Perry Pump swinging a 14-4 prop) and it handles the Stick quiet well, with excellent vertical although not unlimited. I have found it to be a very enjoyable airplane to fly. Stick's are just hard to beat!!!
If you're building the ARF, I would recommend adding some trim to the wings and fuselage as the see-through covering all but makes the airplane invisible in the air and impossible to determine top from bottom. It's appealing to the eye on the ground, but Hanger 9 needs badly to use covering like the smaller 40 versions or the electric version.
And although you didn't ask (perhaps someone else can make a comment here), if I were building the stick again, I would probably opt for the full length ailerons rather than the split flap/aileron set up. Most of the Hanger 9 sticks that are flown at our club went with the full length ailerons. The reason is I would prefer a bit crisper aileron roll on the plane than what I am getting. Of course, I could always add a little more throw to the ailerons or go to high rates to compensate I suppose, but you might want to feel that out a bit before you commit.
I have no complaints with my Stick except for the visibility, and I have taken care of that with some Monocote trim!!!
Above all, we must always remember, "Experience is a hard teacher. She always gives the test first and the lesson some time later!"
You will enjoy your Stick!
Have fun,
Phillip

Saito 100 for sports, 125 for more grunt. Both fits into stock mount. Might be nose heavy - and you can move a servo back if you do not wish to add weight to the tail. Clearance with 16" inch prop ( for Saito 125 ) might be tight - so you might want to get 3 1/2" wheels.
I fly mine electrified with 1200 watts, AUW 7lbs. Quad flaps are a hoot.

Saito 100 or a YS91. I've flown both and they have all the power you will ever need for sport flying.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Go with the quad flaps for sure. Depending on your radio, you can mix them with your ailerons and get flaperons for really quick rolls. By the way, you are going to LOVE that plane!
Fly safe and have fun!!

RE: Best Engine for Ultra Stick 60
If you already have the MDS 78, and it runs well, it should have plenty of power to make a fun plane. I've read good & bad about MDS but have never actually seen one on a plane.
A 91 four stroke (any brand), or the Saito 100 or 125, should be good too.
All of the 60 size sticks (any brand) I have ever seen have been running four strokes. I have an OS 91 on a Big Stik 60 and it has plenty of performance.

I've got an LA 65 with a 13x6 and it flies really well, I couldn't believe it. I thought for sure it would be way underpowered. Your 78 should be fine.

RE: Best Engine for Ultra Stick 60
I have been flying my US 60 for about 2 years now with an older 61 FSR swinging a 13 x 5 zinger wooden prop. it doesn't have the power for awesome 3d but sport flying is fun. remember this is not a speed plane therefore it exceeds at manuers from low throttle to half throttle and use the half throttle to full to get yourself out of trouble. my will climb vertical practically out of site from a vertical stalled maneuver. but like i said it does not have the sustained 3d power. the us 60 will be nose heavy no matter what engine you put on it. I relocated the elevator and rudder (pull-pull) servos to the tail. I just cut and opening for the rudder servo on top in front of the vertical stab. the elevator servo was located about the same position but on the side opposite the exhaust. make sure you locate the rear formers before cutting the sheeting. I also took popsicle sticks to brace the sheeting on the inside where the servos would be mounted. this aided in balancing the plane. this plane is also very forgiving with a too far aft cg. so play with the cg and find out what is right for you.

I flew mine with: OS - FS90 ... Saito 100 and also Saito 125. They all do a great job. With the Saito 125 when putting along at slow speed, and hammer the throttle, the torque would cause slight roll to the left. It was neat to watch it. It will easily handle the 125 with throttle management.

yea that os91fx is a dream on this plane......they say the new os 120ax fits in the same mounting space as the 91. that would be interesting!

I agree with Bruce on the 125. My buddy had a stick with the Saito1.00 and it was awesome. It will easily handle the 1.25 and you will be thoroughly amazed at what this plane can do with a 1.25. Just keep your on it when going vertical as it will get small very quick I will edit and post a vid of his with the 1.00 later tonight and let you decide.

RE: Best Engine for Ultra Stick 60
I currently have a Tower .75 and could not be happier. I started with an OS .61 FX and that flew it pretty well but not with any real authority. Not a lot of vertical and not enough tpower to pull from a bad spot. I had read on here about hte tower .75 and figured "what hte hell, its cheap" so I gave it a try.
Wow is that thing a stump puller. I swing a 12x7 wood prop and it will do anything I throw at it. I am a big fan of the tower .75 now.

I have a ST 91 with mousse can on mine, and 14x4W APC. Boy does it pull vertical! It was still a bit nose heavy even with the servos in the rear though and needed some tail weight. Fun plane. They don't seem to like to knive edge very well and they tend to pitch up with rudder input. Just the design but they are still a great sport plane and still popular after how many? years???

RE: Best Engine for Ultra Stick 60
Would a 4 stroke be a better choice than a 2 stroke ?
I have Saito 125 that is in the box. I thought that would be way too much power.
If it will work I will put the MDS 78 away and save it for another project.
Thank you for all the replies. It was very helpful.

Yeah I have a .75 in a Big Stik .60 with the same results as yours...
No problem going vertical.
I'm running an APC 13x6.
I didn't want to invest in a 4 stroker for an unassuming Stik...

Well if you go to the "Show us your overpowered plane" thread, you will see a guy with an OS 120AX on his stick. I bet the 125 would work. How much more than the 78 does it weigh? I bet not a whole lot more. I have a ST 91 on my stick, and they are really heavy. It took 6 sticky weights on the tail besides moving the servos to the back...

RE: Best Engine for Ultra Stick 60
OS has just come out with a new .75AX. I own a .46AX, two .55AX's and a 1.20AX and all are top notch. I wouldn't anticipate the .75AX not being every bit as good as the others. Should be available at the end of this month.

Interesting that the new 75 weight 19.4 oz, exactly what the 61FX weighs but with a lot more poop. Also, it is ringed, but has a nickel plated liner rather than steel???

RE: Best Engine for Ultra Stick 60
With the price and performance of the Tower .75 I would be hard pressed to justify OS prices!! Not knocking them in any way but the Tower does everything with near perfection. The Tower has no draggy ring either so I am betting it's performance would be better.

RE: Best Engine for Ultra Stick 60
I'm currently flying an Ultra Stick Lite 1.20 and agree completely about the visibility issues otherwise I like it a lot. I was planning on ailerons only but asked here and was talked into the flaps and appreciate the input that changed my mind. A quad setup makes this plane a blast.
With a radio capable of six mixes, the flaps can be coupled with ailerons for crow, the flaps coupled with aileron for increased roll or and the flaps coupled with elevator for reduced loops all adding to the fun.
Mine is powered by a Zenoah G-20 ei and needed no tail weight. The power match is good and will provide unlimited vertical. I'm surprised that a Saito 1.25 is a suggestion for the .60 size as I think the G-20 has a slight bit less power than the Saito but very well powers the ULS 120.
