Hog bipe will be recommended nine times out of ten I'll bet! And I concur.

chesie2:
I am currently flying with great joy a tiger moth from Kyosho with a OS .70 4-s. 12x8.- It takes off in 5 yards, although longer take-off need good skills with down elevator and throtler, It also flots fantastic.- It has flat bottom wings and a scale look to die for, I have buddy-cord it with my compadre, his first time!!, and he had a ball!!
It fits inside of a midsize SUV with both wings attached, No field extra work!
If you are willing to spend more money, great planes has one for a .90 2-s, it should fly better being a larger plane but uses more fuel and more cargo space , If you are moving from a trainer to biplanes, it is important to take your trainer to the field along with the new plane!!, warm-up your nerves first and then try the new plane.- So space to carry two planes is a need

Carl Goldberg's Ultimate get's my vote !

Depends on what you are looking for ? An aerobatic Bipe or a WW1 Bipe, or a Barnstormer perhaps ? I always say everybody should buy the plane he most likes, and give it a try. Just get some help from experienced pilots for the setup of the plane and your maiden flight. Just my $0.02

Ultimate is too much for a second plane unless his first plane was a extra or a war bird. It will be a ultimate pile of splinters!
Hogbipe my friend, if you want a good first bipe. But I will recommend that you save it for your 3rd or 4th plane.

I agree with the Ultimate Pile of Splinters!!!! I would vote on a Sig Smith Mini Plane. Mine is a very sweet flying plane and it fits in the trunk of my Malibu completely ready to fly. I fuel it range check it and Fly!!!!

The smaller fuse makes the Smith a bit squirely on the ground but otherwise a neat bipe. My buddy's flies just fine.

I also have an old sportster bipe (not made anymore ) fits in the car great.

Then again, nothing but nothing flies like a Hog (Hog bipe that is ) Don't mind wing assembly at all

Hey, let's face it, there is no beginner Biplane.

Biplanes are a breed unto themselves. I've had two Hog Bipes and while I like them both, they're not for beginners. Factor in the kit building time, the larger engine, the taildragger factor, and the typical bipe handling characteristics, and you're asking a lot for a beginner.

If you really want to get started with a minimum "emotional" investment, try the Thunder Tiger Biplane ARF. It's little, light, will fly with a 0.40, and handles quite well.

If you take the Smith Mini off in the grass the resistance is high enough to reduce any bad over steer on the ground also low rates on rudder on take off is a must.

Default Sig Hog Bipe!

Anyone else who state another bipe has never flown the HOG BIPE!

it lands like a trainer ... flys like a trainer with no bad habits and yet setup with high rates and atleast a 80 4-stroke in the nose ...

You can have some serious fun with it ... then once you get it out of your system ... switch back to low rates and let it land itself ... (well almost ... ).

They Fly great. Build up your confidence and takes away fear about flying bipes!

Then go fly a pitts! or maybe an Ultimate before the Pitts S-2C.

PS ... I agree to disagree with RWH about no beginner BIPEs ...

If you can fly and land a taildragger ... you can fly a Hog! and the building of them is not bad.

I will agree with his alternate choice of the thunder tigger ARF bipe ... while not personally owning one ... I have seen it fly and though it looks cheap ... and looks ugly with its wannabe pitts color scheme ... it does seem to fly good and the owner is flying it as his first taildragger ... and only flew a thunder tigger high wing trainer before it ... so it really depends on your confidence level.

IMHO. if you think you can ... you will and be pleased you did!

Bipes are fun ... the bigger ones are a hassle to setup at the field ... but sure are nicer to fly! and stay away from the Tiger Lily(Moth) bipe ... flat bottom airfoils suck ... and my dad owns 2 ... guess where they stay ... they do make good looking static display models!

Default This is an example of a Non-Beginner Bipe ....

But not impossible either ... just Stick time is required ...

As most military scale jobs ... its not a PITTS! nor an ULTIMATE!

I, too am in the market for another bipe. I've tried the Sig Skybolt (fast, somewhat heavy and now dead) and a .40 Great Lakes (also very heavy with require nose ballast). I'm a very slow builder, and I'm interested in the TT Tiger Bipe because it's an ARF. Any more opinions on this plane?

I dont think any aerobatic plane is a good suggestion for a beginner. While some Bipes are truly gentle (My DP 1/4 scale lands smoother than any trainer I have flown) the flight characteristics are not what a beginner should be faced with. There is a reason natural progression does not start with advanced aerodynamics, unless you are one of the fortunate "naturals" or have really deep pockets, or just plain dont care. But hey, what the hell do I know....go for it and have a blast!!
