I see so far I'm the only one using a Futaba FX-18. They are sold labeled 'Robbe Futaba'. The product folder would be a good startpost link for this transmitter:

I went with the Hobbico Hobbistar RTF / 71" wing
6 channel Futaba 6EXAP
OS .65 LA (SOME TALK TRASH ABOUT 65 LA, BUT HAS PLENTY OF POWER AND WILL LONG OUT LAST THE PLANE)
Love it, flys geat and has much less dihedral then Nexstar. Nexstar guys are wishing they would have looked at this plane before they bought Nexstar.

Hobbico Superstar 40 ARF
JR 378 (discontinued)
OS 50SX (discontinued) witha Bolly 11.5 x 6 prop
My instructors comments were "the rolls are axial and the large elevator makes it stable". Of the engine he said "Whoa, it's got soooooo much power".

RE: What is the most popular Trainer/Engine/Radio?
The best Trainer on the market is the one that gets you soloed & comes home in one piece ready to fly again tomorrow. For me that was a NexStar, & a Tower Trainer. Both still alive & well today. The NexStar has been raped for parts but is still a perfectly good airframe & could be airworthy again with just a couple hours of returning parts to their original home. The Tower is still in it's original form & flown regularly as a warm up / high wind plane. It is still a lot of fun to fly too.

RE: What is the most popular Trainer/Engine/Radio?
Goldberg Falcon 56 MK II
OS .19 Max with exhaust wiper (no muffler)
1970 Orbit 4 channel radio setup for REM
It was flown and trimed by an experience RC'er, then I flew it and landed it on first flight.
I took off on the second flight and the experienced guy landed it.
The third flight was completely solo.
1970 - no simulators but a lot of articles in RCM in the mid to late 60's, plus 5 years of control line flying.

RE: What is the most popular Trainer/Engine/Radio?
i'm self taught, i started with a hobbico nexstar select. with just a week of evenings on the supplied sim. i went and found me a very big open space. and what do you know, the plane flew just like the sim, slow and easy. i slowly turned off the eye, about every 15 flights. then after about a year and utter bordem in the end. i moved on to my next plane. hope this helps, i did for me

Goldberg Freedom 20, Kit
O.S. .40 FP (Discontinued) - Started with an O.S. .20FP, it flew great, but was lacking in take off power, need the whole runway (an new .25 engine would do great)
Spektrum DX7
This plane floats unbelievably!! You can almost thermal with it, with a slight breeze, you can float around all day.
Sad to say, she went in nose first the other week while attempting an inverted flight. Got disoriented, and she went it. But it's on the repair board right now and should be in the air in a week!!
