Default What is pylon racing???

A form of head to head racing for RC aircraft. The most prevelent form of AMA rulebook racing in this country are two different classes of Q-500 and Quarter Midget 40 that range in speeds from around 130 to 185 mph. Most of these races are run four competitors at a time in a racehorse start/takeoff and flown around an extended triangle course with the far pylon just over 600ft away. The pilot/callers stand inside the course and fly around themselves.

There is another form called Scale warbird racing and giant scale racing in a number of different classes. The scale warbirds race around two pylons with the pilots in a normal sport flying position and the course is normally 700 ft between the poles and in the case of giant scale racing 1400 ft between the two poles. Both Scale warbird and giant scale normally use a flying start either a countdown to cross the start line or a pace plane.

Most all forms of racing complete a race after 10 laps to the checkered flag in the case of the AMA Q500 and Q40 10 laps is 2.5 miles and the fastest folks are completeing those 10 laps in just over one minute and that is from a standing start.

Pylon racing is more than one plane (normally 4) racing against each other round three poles or pylons. There are two at one end of the track and one at the other, and the planes do 10 laps and the winner . . . um . . . . wins!

There are many classes of pylon models, from serious very very fast ones (prices measured in thousands!) through many less serious model classes, to plain ol' trainer races.

There are loads of web sites dealing in pylon racing, but try this one for a start:-

There should be a pylon forum here on this site, if you want more information.
