classic pattern plane for rear exhaust 61

Hanno Prettner Calypso could also be a candidate. The kit by Modeltech of Calypso can be found now and then on ebay and such places.
Hanno Prettner Supra Star will work also for a rear exhaust engine (a drawing of a copy of this plane that was sold as EZ Supra Star is available, the copy is named Dupli-Star).

To concur with Bo, the Calypso is an excellent early candidate for a RE engine due to its ease of build. While I built mine with the same engine Hanno used on the Magic two years prior (a ST X61 TST), there are some issues with certain non pumped (or metered) engines running inverted. The ST being one that poses certain problems. That said, I recently heard that un-pumped vintage Rossi's run (ran) exceptionally well inverted so I would think the new Speed/13 (assuming that's the engine you have) would be no different given its designed by the same Mr. Rossi.
To extend the Calypso concept, all of Hanno's designs starting with the Magic to the Mystic were designed for inverted RE engines. This includes the Magic, Calypso, Supra Fly, Supra Star, Mystic, Sensation and last but not least the Dalotel. All these designs were conceived with a pipe centered slung under the wing or tucked in a tunnel provided under the wing (e.g., Mystic, Sensation and Dalotel).
Depending on the design, diffferent fuse rise headers are required but fortunately, NovaRossi now makes three different "fuse top" (bottom in the case of all these) headers which between the three of them should accomodate all of Hanno's designs above.
Lastly, to extend credit to a main competitor of the era, Many of Matt's designs were also designed for and with RE engines in mind starting with the Arrow all the way to the four stroke era (Hanno bowed out around that time) which incidentally were also designed for inverted mounts. The four strokes had wrap around flexible headers which attached to a pipe while the two strokes were simpler with a simpler header.

I have to agree with that! I always wanted to get my paws on a new P60. Haven't been able to yet but I did manage to source a bored out P80. I'm curious to see whether it indeed has considerably more muscle than the new Speed/13...
What have you done for the header? They have the same sort of problem/limitation as the ST X60/61 in that they have the nozzle exhaust built into the crankcase. One solution I suppose would be to "double couple" the header both at the case junction and then at the header end junction with a NR type header and a cut off header inlet. I tried the header direct to see if it would slip over the nozzle with the provided silicone rand and it's barely doable but the problem is that the nozzle is too long for the length of the header inlet opening preventing it from properly bottoming out against the case.

Nice plane there. I tried to have Supra Fly shipped from US to my country some years ago but it was prohibited expensive (the wing was already assembled). I can not imagine it is many (unassembled) EZ Supra Fly is left out there.

Dave,
Yes, I think so. The pipes are occasionally found on auction with the engines but the headers not so much. At least I haven't seen them.
Could you post some snaps of the engine with header & pipe. I'd like to see how they go about the header system.
TIA, David

Looking for plane to put OS .61V into?
I seet his thread is a little old, But I have a OS .61 V rear exhaust, I am trying to find a pattern plane to put it in? Or any other type of Plane? I tried Birdi but I never get any reply from them whenever I send them a email. and no answer on the phone? I was just wondering if they are still in business?

Skybolt,
most at if not all of the models mentioned earlier in the thread would suit your 61 VF admirably. It is a short stroke engine happy turning 11" props so I'd aim for a 1980's design with an upright engine. A little homework is required to know what kind of model you want and design that you like.

RCAiir.com has the Arrow which I just bought, nice kit and available immediately. Upright engine, pipe down the top pf the fuselage, removeable cover for east access.
APC 11x7 with 15% nitro fuel, add 4 oz of castor for a total of 22% oil and that VF will haul and last forever, great engine.

Hoping he won't mind, I'll post a few snaps of his model here for inspiration. His work, efforts and model is just too nice not to share with others. For further details on his scratch built model from UK Arrow plans, refer to his thread on the UK forum.
In his case an OS 61RF LS engine is being used but nothing would preclude this model from flying equally well on a more vintage OS 61VF SS, or, for that matter, with a NR Speed/16 or similar (IMO - I think I'm required to say that as on the "Good Wife" ).
