Please help. Dues and distance question.
I am part of a committee attempting to work up a future plan for our club. For the sake of comparison I am wondering two things. First how far do you drive from your home to your flying site and second how much are your clubs dues. Thanks in advance for your help.

Club #1 and the home club, Forty dollars a year new members fifty dollars a year (this cover gate key and member badge. Seven miles from the house.
Club #2 this is my float flying club and they provide a year round site and provide a manned recovery boat twice a week also important to me a concrete wheelchair access to a flight station.
Thirty dollars a year and new members forty dollars a year. 70 miles from the house.

About 10 miles/fifteen min of driving. The dues are $75/yr. This seems to be on the high end of cost but that goes toward a really nice field and several annual events. The field is 500x40ft of pavement with smooth trimmed grass all the way around.

My club dues are $30.00 a year and for a new member there's a $10.00 initiation fee. Under 18 is half that. My drive is around 20 miles but there are a couple of guys that drive a little farther. We are a small club and we fly from an old land fill site. The club doesn't have to pay anything to fly there. We just have to have insurance which is covered by the AMA.

To make up a dues structure you need to take into account your operating costs. Do you cut your own grass? If so you have gas and maintenance for the mower, plus it's always a good idea to start saving for a new machine. Then you have Fun Flies and any other club function for the year to think about. Here in NY we charge $75.00 and $50.00 for seniors. Under 18 is $5.00. New adult members pay $150.00 for the first year and then it goes to regular rates.

10 or so miles away, had to buy a share of the 32 acres of prime bottom land ($1600) and dues of $135/yr that covers field mowing, porta potties, 4 new solar powered 30 amp charging stations this year and general field maintenance. Beautiful field THAT WE OWN, Great deal! D.H.

I was the club president several times over the course of 24+ years. During that time membership had its ups & downs. Some years we didn't get enough to pay the bills, usually club officers made up the rest.. What some members fail to take in consideration is the club operating costs and future needs. These bills have to be paid to have a place to fly. My biggest complaint with fellow members, was allowing non-members to fly at our field. I didn't have a problem with them flying a couple times, but many seem to became regulars until I or another club officers told them they must join the club. It gets old being the bad guy. Just because they have an RC airplane & equipment does not mean they can fly at your field for free. Just because you have a bowling ball or golf clubs does not allow you to use them at the local bowl ally or golf course without paying.
When you plan for the cost of membership you should plan for all operating costs and future needs. Also you should look at the likelihood of members in your area. Our hobby has changed over the years, ARF, park flyers and quad-copters seem to be the going thing. Park flyers and the quad flyers really don't need your flying field.

I live in the city. Can't get any more city than were I live unless I move downtown. So...
Club #1 ($100 a year) is an hour drive. Club #1 is slowly loosing members and not sure it'll be around in a year or two. Club #1 also requires I cut grass twice a year in the summer. Hard to get people out to fly here on the weekends.
Club #2 (also $100 a year) is an hour away in opposite direction and a good friend fly's at that club. So I joined, as there's always someone around to fly with.
Looking into a club north of me that is only 35 minutes away. $175 new members and $100 a year after that. On waiting list for next year.
Some of the club discount yearly fee if you participate in grass cutting and/or field maintenance.

Club dues are $90 a year for adult membership, $70 a year for senior citizens and under 18's. We're on private leased land with 10yr lease w/option to renew every 10yrs(we've been there about 28yrs now). We've done all improvements over the years, including 600' paved runway. We have several events through the year to supplement our funds, for maintenance, as well as the causes we all support too.
I'm about 15miles from there, but we have members in surrounding communities as well.. We have a few regulars that come about 40 miles a few times a week.. but many of us are less then 20 miles. We're comfortably located in the "country" with some resources(small community) about 2 miles away, where we can food or supplies if need be. We have about 180 members on average.
Yes.. we get the freeloaders occasionally, and the habitual offenders, thing is we all want them to just join.. we don't want to turn anyone away, but we don't/won't foot their bill either. I chased a guy off a few weeks back, but did explain its only fair that he pay just like we do. There's no reason why someone can buy a $300 plane, but not have funds to pay the dues.The guy said money was tight...I told him sell one of his planes and pay up, or don't come fly until you can.

15 miles, $50 bucks covers gate key, car window sticker, membership card, field improvements etc... Since we lease from a public corp of engineer property, club membership is not required to fly, but being AMA member is required to fly at the field per corp of engineers. If you are a non member without a car window sticker you will have to also pay daily $4 fee to get into the federal park, as a club member we don't have to pay with our window sticker since that has been taken care of with our lease agreement with the corp of engineers. With our gate key were are able to use the flying field during hours the park isn't opened and also when the park is permanently closed from OCT-FEB.

Club #1 - $25/yr - 30 miles - sod farm with no amenities. Access limited due to flooding during certain times of year and/or farming activites.
Club #2 - $84/yr - 15 miles - private club w/established flight line, pilot stations, club house. Picnics and events 4~5 times/yr. Club pays to have field mowed and for improvements/repairs out of dues money.

Cost is several hundred dollars a year.
I also have to do most of the mowing,
rolling, etc, and pay for mower gas, .
grass seed, fertilizer, etc.
The benefit is that I only have to
open my back door and I am there.

13 miles, $100 per year dues. I usually make donations to the club to help keep costs down, so more like $200 per year for me.
Club dues are just a matter of what the club needs to survive. We rent our land and pay to have our lawn mowed, so we need the high dues to stay afloat. We don't accumulate money, in fact some years we are short and have to charge an assessment.
