RE: so why do you fly
it's a great hobby, you never get bored.
not flying, your here, building, thinking of the next one, theres always something to grab your mind.
me, i fly for a laugh, i like to learn new things, but theres guys that fly the same old plane, do the same boring flight, and thats it... but their happy and thats all that matters.
i'm a bit of a collector for no good reason too.. i have 300+ planes on MS Combat sim, and 100+ on FMS, if only my wallet could keep up in real life i'd have one of everything just for the hell of it.
my tranny has 15 currently, thats 15 flyable, i normally just fly 3-4 of them

I fly because it is better than the alternative: Crashing.
Seriously though...I do because I like the people I meet, I am addicted to anything in the area of aviation, and because I get airsick. Flying RC lets me still have the fun without the sickness. Although there are those that say I have a sickness already.

If it weren't for racing, I probably would be out of the hobby. I fly for the adrenalin rush that racing in a close heat can bring. Many racers (myself included) have said that they would rather lose a close heat than lap the other contestants. A close race with four planes each trading places for the lead around pylons #2 and #3 is what it's all about. That simply is the most fun that can be had in R/C! It just doesn't get any better!

RE: so why do you fly
Been flying since gummi band in 1934 - Gas in 1936. I've flown full scale up until about six years ago. Was on a combat crew over Europe in the great unpleasantness, flew for the West Coast distributor of Piper for a few years. anything that will get me into something connected with aviation is a priority here. All that being said I still fly for fun. When I get so contest oriented that is takes away the pure enjoyment they'll be patting me in the face with a spade. RC is the most fun you can have and still stand on the ground. P.S. I sail RC sailboats too.

When I'm flying I forget everything else. Flying takes the stress of every day life and puts it on hold for awhile. What a concept!
You know what they say:
Even a bad day at the flying field is better than a great day at work!

I like the following:
Things that require gas or electricity to run, power tools, being scared half senseless, bodily injury, being outdoors, getting frustrated at inanimate objects, pretending to be someone I'm not, acting like a child, fellowship with people with the same interests, accomplishing the impossible, paint and glue fumes, staying up all night, annoying my wife at times, road trips, long hikes in the country looking for my airplane, exercise from chasing my airplane, and defying gravity.
In a nutshell.

RE: so why do you fly
I fly for the same reasons everyone else has said: challenging, interest, friends, adrenalin, aviation history, technical interest and so on, but also for the pure freedom and romance that flying represents when you're cavorting all over that big blue sky with your Extra and with a big blue smoke trail drawing out every manoeuvre you perform. Nothing like it - it's almost a religous experience sometimes, especially when you're flying to music too. On days like that I think, "I don't care if I die tonight 'cos it just aint ever gonna get any better than today," But then on another day damn me it does!

I fly to show the world that I care...I care about the little balsa trees that dream of soaring with the clouds...I care about the little blobs of melting plastic that cry out for something more than a life as a toilet fixture, but to be a 14/8 masterairscrew prop or a 605 hitec sevo box...I care for the women who long for their husbands to get the hell out of the house before they kill them...yes' I fly because I care...have you hugged your model today...

RE: so why do you fly
being an aviation junkie it was only natural since I cant afford a real plane
it relaxes me and gets my mind off the stress of the real world. it challenges me and I am an addict now!! Im the same way as many of, always thinking of the next one, scheming how to pay for them too , hehe
You can have enough if you ask me and yes I have hugged my model today

Building an airplane from wood sticks and sheets of balsa to a finished airplane, there is no greater joy or pride then strapping an engine to it and seeing it fly in the air. Ya say to yourself... I built that... and it flys!

RE: so why do you fly
i do it because i love aviation. from the moment i knew how, i was interrested in makingthings fly. many past teachers of mine have remarked that i would be into planes because i made enough paper airplanes that the teachers had to say no more. i got my first plane for christmas when i was 10. i am now 13 and getting into 3d. part of the fun is wondering what would happen to you if you were strapped inside the plane, and what you would look like afterward. part of the fun is jsut fulfilling that need to aviation. part of the fun, and i am not ashamed to admit it is showing off. but there is also the social side. The instructor i was the best friends with was a guy by the name of george. he is a great guy. powered by cofee, kinda an old timer. really nice guy. then there are also all the other guys at the club. i like them all except for 1, and i don't think that anybody likes that one guy. but then there is the basin too, most people there are really nice. granted some people fly like they are blind, but i guess it is the common interrest in flying that brings us all together.
