Yak, ugh....:(
First I noticed a lot of Extra's....Then came the Caps, followed by the Edge 540's.....and I liked the way they looked. And still do! The 260's look cool IMHO, but I can't stomach the Yak's....maybe it is the round cowl - but something about that plane (and there are MANY different ones to look at -ugh) just doesn't agree with me....
And no, I haven't flown one, nor do I intend to either.....
Anyway, anyone agree with me on this one?

I don't really like any of them. However the Extras are the classics of all.
Yes, the Yaks are real UMFs.

Function over form.
Wing and Horizontal stab are on the thrust line. Makes for a very neutral aerobatic plane.
The big round cowl is also nice for consistent speed.

There is no comparison which flys the best.

Okay. Can you quantify that... as in HOW the Yak flies "better".
I ask because, while I'm no contest pilot, I've been flying these things for almost 20 years, and the Extras (specifically, the WH 300LX you mentioned, along with my H9 260 and others) fly as smoothly and as precisely as anything I've ever had my hands on.
I'm looking at 30%'ers; not ready to buy just yet, but I WILL be getting a new one.
So, tell me how and why the Yak is better; and I'd also be interested in your definition of "better".

HATED the look of the Yak...i also thought perhaps it was the round cowl or something, but couldn't quite put my finger on it.
Then, recently, a club member finished up is 85" QQ Yak. First time he brought it out (before it was ready to fly) i thought "Gah...another ****ing Yak."
The next trip out, I thought "Hrmm...ya know, that's not THAT bad looking of a plane. I mean, it's still ugly, but it kinda has a certain...charm."
The next time he brought it, I caught myself thinking "Dang...that's a pretty cool looking plane, really."
Not long afterwards, I saw it in the air. Completely aside from how it flew, it just looked...well...COOL in the air.
Finally, last week, I saw the owner start really flying it, as he's growing more comfy with it...
The end of this story?
There's a GP 25% Yak ARF being built in my shop as we speak...and it's simply gorgeous.
*shrug*
I think they kinda grow on ya.

Some Yaks like the Comp-ARF are ugly while others look pretty good (QQ, Carden, etc). The real Yak is a thing of Russian Beauty, which may be a contradiction of terms but you can't argue with a thumping radial engine and rivets that look like they were installed with a hammer.

Personally, I don't care for the canopy on the Yaks.

RE: Yak, ugh....:(
When I started looking for my first giant scale plane, I was really set on an Edge 540 as I had a smaller one (60 size). Then, I started looking at Extras. Someone made the suggestion to look at a Yak. Well, I hated Yaks! I had only seen one fly out at our field and I always cringed looking at the thing. Still though, with an open mind I started looking at them. Hm, a few days go by - still ugly but the flight reports are really nice. After a week of looking at different planes the Yak had really grown on me.
So, I ended up buying one. Yea, still thought it was fairly ugly until I took it up. WOW! In the air it's gorgeous - it's a ferrari compared to anything else I've ever flown handling wise. Thinking back, I am so glad I didn't go with another airframe.

Real planes have round engines .
Personally, like the lines of the older SU-26 better than the newer Sukhoi or the Yak, but any of the 3 are better than the extra-edge look-alikes.
Of course, the Monster Pitts beats them all hands-down, round engine and 2 wings, the way airplanes should be.

RE: Yak, ugh....:(
I was feeling the same way. Everywhere ya turn it was YAK....
Wasn't a fan, until I found one... a 25% GP Yak on Tower for $250. I had to buy it, mostly to help with the "anti-motivation" funk I've been in. It's done it's job and should be finished this weekend.
Overall, I am slowly falling in love with this plane... except the wheel spats. They are friggin ugly!

RE: Yak, ugh....:(
The Yak certainly seems to be the flavor of the month this year, the 260 might be next.
That is 90% based on wing loading in this comparison. The Wildhare was the best thing in it's day but Chris H. showed everyone what a lighter airframe would do. Your KMP was available thanks to him and QQ and eveyone else is a slight variation on that theme.
Speaking of QQ it is one of the best of the readily available planes of it's class (50 cc) but the color scheme certainly hasn't grown on me.
A Yak with the checker board cowl and red, white and black color scheme is one good looking plane.
I have a KMP Yak, and a WH 300LX. There is no comparison which flys the best. Give me a Yak anyday.

A 25% GP Yak on Tower for $250! Want one for that price, where/when did you see that in Tower?
