Iota DLS-55 questions
Hi,
When I plug my power supply into the wall, it sparks and usually trips the circuit breaker (at home, seems fine at the field). I saw another post about this on NSRCA site but there were no replies. Any thoughts?
Also, does anyone know the type of fuses the DLS-55 uses? I want to get a spare set but really don't want to pull the unit from the charge box to look as I'm consumed with too many other projects at the moment.
Thank you,
Joe

Hey Joe,
Mine uses 30amp "blade" fuses. I'm surprised your blowing a breaker. At max output that should only be pulling about 8amps from a 110v circuit. Are you sure there isn't a lot of other stuff already on that circuit? Are you plugging it in without a load attached (I hope)?

Joe, The Iota has a high "inrush" current when you plug it in and can trip circuit breakers. One option is to plug it into a power strip first with a switch on it and then turn the switch on. This eliminates the spark and the trip. Or try and plug it into the wall "fast" to minimize the spark, this helps too. We can tell you some stories of tripping the power off at the Days Inn in Muncie at the NATS by plugging in some IOTA power supplies in our rooms...

.
Had the same problem with mine, arcing and welding the prongs to the outlet when plugging in. . . . you need to use a power strip with a switch and let that take the spark.
.
Also, I had to go to a non-GFCI outlet in my garage. When my charger would ramp up it would trip the GFCI. After a week of half-charged batteries I finally figured out what was going on.
.
The Iotas can also make my generator "dance" around in a circle at the field - if that makes you feel any better!!
