I may be having a senior moment, but I thought it was 1 part 20/20 glow and 2 parts premium gasoline? I need to go back to the beginning of the thread. Also, has anyone tried Coleman instead of gasoline? Is the octane of the premium gasoline necessary? I may have to try it.

I should have read first and spoken last. Yes, it is 10/10 glow as you said. My bad. (I am turning 7 decades plus one on Friday, so excuse the senior moment please)

But, how about the premium gas thing?

i think one of the experts in this thread suggested using premium gas, just can't remember what post it was, early on i think, correct me if i'm wrong, please. the glow fuel was 10/10 % for big supertigres with the end result was i believe was 32:1 oil ratio. then with my gas to glow adapter with a gasket (or the one for engs. with a tapered seat) and an os "F" glow plug, you should be good to go. just strip the eng. of ALL the stuff not needed for glow operation, then rock and roll!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Yes, that is correct. 1/3 10/10 glow fuel, to 2/3 premium gasoline. Some engines will detonate with regular gasoline. NO COLEMAN FUEL. It would almost surely detonate and ruin itself. And finally, yes, the oil percentage ends up being around 32:1. You do NOT add any oil to the mix; the oil is in the glow fuel.

Good luck and have fun, it really does work well. I even have a 50cc twin running on it and it runs and works great.

I wonder why it is that high nitro in high compression glow engines will result in detonation, but high octane in high compression gas engines eliminates detonation? What happens in high, or low compression gas engines running on different amounts of nitro and different percentages of methanol in the mix, running on glow ignition? Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

in short,,

Gasoline,,
the more Octane the slower the Fuel burns,,

Nitro,,
the more Compression an Engine has the sooner the Nitro will Ignite, so the higher the Nitro percentage the lower your Compression should be

hi all i have converted my dle to glow no petrol changed the carby to one with bigger jets for racing.A four stroke glow plug. 20% nitro 10% oil the rest methanol it runs smother turns a little more pitch better than standard will be racing it in April

I"m wondering why you can't go to 3-5% oil. I was thinking methanol burns cooler than petrol besides.

i hadn't thought about trying less oil as it seemed to run so smooth and the exhaust is low enough to keep the model clean

Gasoline has some inherent lubricity, methanol does not. Does anyone know what the contribution to "oiling" the gasoline has? I do not.

Part of the high oil in methanol fuels is for the connecting rod ends. Typical glow engines have no bushings or bronze bushings. Gasoline engines have needle or roller bearings on the rod ends and of course ball or roller bearings on the main crankshaft.

That said, you should be able to reduce the oil percent for a gas engine converted to glow, since the engine has proper bearings. Again how much I don't know.

I know Tartan recommends 1% more oil in their Glow Engines than their Gasoline Engines, but here both their Glow and Gasoline Engines have Bearings in the bottom of their Rods

He is running a 16:1 oil mix. The Gas/Glow mix comes out at about 32:1. Not enough oil. You would have to juggle the mix around to come up with a mix that has enough oil, but still has sufficient methanol in the brew to keep the glow plug lit.

I have been kind of thinking in the same direction. Considering that a methanol/gas mix at a 1:2 ratio will still ignite with a glow plug, could a similar mixture be used with added oil with the main objective to get a cheaper cost for glow fuel, for use in a standard glow engine. I would think the main concern would be to get a mixture which would reliably be tunable with a standard carb. I would think a 1:1 ratio of gas and methanol with 16-20% oil should run fine. If you use 20% nitro glow fuel you would end up with 10% or so nitro. There may be some loss of power, but wouldn't it run a bit cooler, so maybe less oil could be used, like 12-16%, so you would get a less slimy plane than normal glow fuel??[X(]

Not a reply...but another way to run a engine & keep the cost down. Find a good SuperTiger 2300 or bigger. You can find them at swap meets dirt cheap. Use E 85 gas, a OS Max 4 cycle glow plug and use about 16% oil (Klotz) and your good to go. I have seen them run ....like perfect! Capt,n

Adding gasoline to glow fuel is nothing new. It is done in the "Texaco" events I believe. It can extend the run you get from a given tank size.

However, when doing your figuring of fuel mixes and thinking of converting glow engines, remember that gasoline burns hotter than the methanol in glow fuel, not cooler.

FYI
I had some success with a new stock ST gs40 glow engine running E85 + Castor(pharmacy) , 4:1 aka 20%
it ran kinda hot, and had surging problems with some tanks,
leading me to believe I wasnt getting a good blend of the castor in its cold weather semi-tar-like thickness.

I ordered a gallon jug of Kart castor to resume experiments now that its Shorts&Tee season again.
I'll improve my blending procedure and report if I get better results in a few weeks.



ps, the wee lil 15% gas in E85
WILL mess with any non-gas-rated parts of your fueling up equipment.
It killed the black plunger in my 2oz syringe

Interesting. But, 1:4 is 25%. 20% would be 1:5. I have some Klotz syn plus castor. Did you have to leave the glow plug ignited or would it run with it depowered? Thanks.
