RE: 4th annual Speed Rally is ON!!!!
Vic;
I am not sure how serious I am because I really don't hang much with my local club. They are good people, but the club field is usually quite crowded on weekends and that is the only time I can fly. A couple freinds and I have a spot we fly at for the most part, and we use the club field for maidens and for fast or unusual planes. Years ago the club had a speed contest and it was a big hit, we had a member that was a police officer and he was able to use a radar for the day. Noise is not usuallyan issue at our field as it is a ways out in the desert.
I will run it by the powers that be at the next club meeting and see if there is any interest in an event here. I want it, but I am not the "Big Sponser" you need! One other thing to keep in mind, our field is at about 4500', so overall speeds will suffer. The field will hold a fairly large event with parking, but there is no power or water there.
I will keep you posted if there is any interest here.

The set up and flying the right line to the gun is all important. Can make all the difference. The pilot that knows how to do it deserves the victory.

Well two points, no one broke 225, and you only have to be within +/- 8 degrees of on axis of the radar beam to register 99% of the actual aircraft speed. Saying that you observed a 225 mph pass is like driving by a quickie race and adding the 60 mph of the car to the 165 mph of the airplane.
Of course I have harsher views of diving into a speed trap. But then I don't speak German.
The top speed was a two way average of 217 which is quite impressive.

Cmon Bob, it's all about fun and bragging rights. Nobody else is doing anything like this in the US where everyone gets the same chance. Straight and level traps might be in the future but for now we will keep having the fun. That huge smile on Chris's face is what all of this is about.
We will give her a go again next year.[8D]

Just some quick calculations about tip speed on the Batleth . . .
[ul][*] First estimate the RPMs (225 mph/5.5 pitch is a very, very rough estimate of RPM) 41,000 rpms[*] Then figure out the distance the propeller tip travels in a single revolution (4.75 X pi) = 15 inches [pi = 3.14][*] Then multiply 15 inches by 41,000 RPM = 615,000 inches per minute.[*] Then convert from inches per minute to feet per minute 615,000 inches /12 = 51,250 feet per minute[*] then convert to miles per minute 51,250 feet / 5280 = 9.7 miles per minute[*] then convert to miles per hour 9.7 X 60 = 580 miles per hour is my estimate of the prop tip speed.
[/ul]
The prop will be a pproaching the speed of sound (768mph) at about 54K rpms. Using my initial my assumption (pitch X rpm/1,000 = speed in mph) a 5.5 inch pitch at 54K rpms would be 297 mph!

RE: 4th annual Speed Rally is ON!!!!
Vic,
Thanks for another great speed rally. It was a blast, I had a great time, and I wear my 2011 Carolina Speed Rally hat proudly. This is a well run event that you take great pains to make as low key and fun as possible. I highly recommend this event to anyone. You don't have to be a speed guy to enjoy this event. I'm not. I flew a Shoestring with an OS55AX that has a lot of room for speed improvement for next year. 125 mph is the min for a sticker and my goal is to qualify for sticker! By the way, the burgers were some of the best that I have ever experienced at a flyin!
