I hope to maiden my extreme ride, or ride my extreme maiden (much the same thing in this case) next summer. This is someone else's but it will end up looking a lot like this. Tricked out Continental A-75 with custom Keith Black heads, a blower and methanol.

Nice MJD. 40 to 45 on the water feels like 90. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-QJLOVLg7M R/C plane piloted from a car THROUGH a tunnel!

RE: How fast is extreme?
Well, I haven't started any kind of blog. If nothing else, what I may end up doing is posting stuff on the MikesRC website. When something interesting happens I'll get something up. At the mo we're making a winter workshop in a 40 foot container. Heat and light are in progress. It took forever to get started on anything, but we did some serious scrounging and scoring. It is a 90% done project, we have to frame the wings, ribs are done, fuse and tail feathers are complete and covered and painted as received, and we'll redo the covering. Apart from wings it was nearly ready to go when we got it, but it had a Corvair conversion compelte with the belt drive cooling fan, and we pulled that out pronto.

RE: How fast is extreme?
How fast is Extreme Speed? - try a Sig Wonder with a OS 32 on it...... or a epoxy composite JART slope soarer doing 210 - 250 km/hr........ Those Magnums are hellishly fast too.... what are they doing? 200 mph?
The world speed record for modified slope soarer RC gliders is around 600 km/hr (just over 360 mph), and that is without an engine............ Did somebody mention that only jet jocks are flying fast.......?
The world speed record for a RC delta with a "pulse jet" engine on it is 415 mph - and that is 1940 technology - start it, launch it, fly it, no throttle.
I guess extreme speed is when you are flying and you say to yourself "what the hell am I doing without bicycle clips on my pants ?"

It's been pointed out a multitude of times that dynamic soaring can produce amazing top speeds. So can gravity. Sheet balsa model rocket boost gliders can fly vertically at 200mph easily. We figured out turbines were faster than props in WWII. Toss an airplane shaped Christmas ornament in the path of a tornado and watch what happens.
None are on topic here though. Achieving high speeds with a prop driven RC model has specific challenges. Extreme is just a long way from normal, whatever your "normal" or everyone else's is, as you choose. For me, an extreme Earl Grey tea has two spoonfuls of local wildflower honey in it. That's living on the edge.

RE: How fast is extreme?
Hi MJD, yes, I agree with you.
It will be interesting to see how fast one can go with a prop plane - I guess the limiting factor is when the prop is starting to cavitate at that speed.
Why don't we brainstorm on an "ideal fastest plane design" in this forum for the next couple of weeks, then those interested can build it, fly it, measure the speed and compare. Something very interesting and good may actually come from it. I, for one, would like to build such plane.
Let's maybe call this plane "Flying Anvil"
Suggested Guidelines:
1. Size (no need to be massively big) Maybe limit it to 100 cm or 36" wingspan
2. Delta or conventional design plane
3. Airfoil (s)
4. Material: Balsa/epoxy composite/other material
5. Engine and propping (perhaps limit engine size to make it within most people's reach?) Maybe 0.46 glow engine max (any glow fuel mixture)
6. Probably handlaunch
7. Any other design criteria?
8. No need to be expensive - i.e. lets put a $100 cap on the plane without engine/radio gear - or what do you suggest?
Then we see if we can tweak it to go even faster.
Any constructive comments most welcome. What say thee?

RE: How fast is extreme?
Maybe something along the lines of an LR Racing Devil like the one on the pic. About 36" wingspan with a 0.25" glow engine, no need to copy it - but perhaps something like this - what have you?
Maybe one could think of including electrics too, although at this stage I think that a small, sooped up glow engine will outperform electrics - I maybe wrong.....

So the best bet is to rule out electrics coz they suck.
Btw for under $100, I can get two Screamin Demon kits (I get a big discount), and they're only 32" wingspan. But they don't count.

RE: How fast is extreme?
Not extreme, but here are some pics of one of the new Electric Formula 1 kits that is being proposed for racing. Currently in the 125 mph range.
Coming in an ARF sometime next year. This is a Little Toni.

Looks nice, should be a cool racing class with manageable but exciting speeds and slick looking airplanes.

RE: How fast is extreme?
The maximum battery weight should be 325 grams and 314 grams without the balance tap, and was based on a 4 cell 2650 mah 30c lipo pack. We are using the Flightmax and Turnigy packs ($39 and $36 each) and the Turnigy 35-42 SK 1250kv and 1000kv motors ($17.51) with 8-6 and 9-7.5 props with good results. These are not the highest quality components made, but for a very reasonable investment, you have a nice setup and the ability to experiment with different kv/prop combinations.
the planes are like 25-32 sized, so it seems faster. I'm sure it will evolve, but they are trying to keep it cheap, and not too fast, but fast enough.

RE: How fast is extreme?
Not sure what speed range you guys are considering extreme but with the Park Zone electric Strykers that come out of the box at a claimed 80mph (maybe in a steep dive) felt extreme my 1st few flights. But now moving into 100mp/h club with it to make more fun.
Guys in the actual extreme range with this bird are pushing 150-175+ range.
At those speeds it's a matter of doing everything you can do to strengthen that chunk of foam so it doesn't rip apart!
I consider that extreme!

RE: How fast is extreme?
Very nice sleek planes you got there......
Some time ago I've got the attached pics of a full scale Relentless Nemesis - this will make a nice model but info is a little scarce on it - wing section etc. One don't want to re-invent the wheel as it can get very technical..... but it looks such a nice, sleek plane....maybe one day Santa will drag one down the chimney........Santa, let me know the dimensions of the chimney and I will build it.......
