Before get to NASA and Space Shuttles, I think the original question was related to RC planes that we as hobbyists fly and compete with. Just a thought. The Golden age of Flight had some guys with quite some original air racing ideas, some of that is captured in models that we fly today.

I get sidetracked every now and then....
but does the F-4 Phantom count????
Those that have been taken from the boneyard and refitted with R/C stuff to be used for missile target drones???

I think it only counts if that F4 swings a prop, there are jet forums....and sadly, be as it may, we propswingers, the electric boys and the jet jocks are outrun by a sl**esoaring glider. So we need to get our speeds up.......
