The best grease I found to put on your seals is a clear silicone grease call Dow Corning(R) 4 actually its not even Grease its a silicone compound.

http://www.dowcorning.com/content/ne...4_Compound.asp

we use it all the time in electrical work to stop water ingress into our junction boxes

put it on your rubber for extra protection

LMAO

Dan,

P.S i did give some to Jimi to try but i don't think he has yet.

Thanks Dan, I'll look for the Dow 4 at my local electrical shops I have a coupe near by.

John, I looked around a bit and found the Turnigy Marine 60A Brushless Boat ESC and 3660SL 3060kv Brushless Inrunner (WaterCooled) motor on Hobby King for $100.

When my guy flooded it killed my lipo battery. The salt ate the circuit board. I guess I need to seal the battery too.

My buddy wants one of these but he has no experience with RC and not a lot of dough. I was thinking about getting him a $99 Lisa from Ebay.
Are those total cr#P or can they be fixed up later?

Thanks guys, GREAT list.

Nqd's are fine.

Main problem people have with them is water seeping into the hull but if you pull the hull apart and seal the hull properly you wont have that problem.
Once you have done all the necesary mods that need to be done i doubt you will be able to tell the difference in performance between any of them.

only major difference is a huge price tag for the kyosho's.

If you do buy a NQD

get marine grade silicone.
pull the hull apart into two pieces by unscrewing all the screws and sliding a butter knife around the seem to pull it apart.
clean all the glue out where they have glued both pieces of hull (this is very important)
put some epoxy resin on the back of where the engine mount screws mount
Epoxy more weight inside the hull... Ive put 150g in where the front floorpan is but other guys have put different amounts.
run the silicone around the seems/grooves and put a bit of silicone or epoxy around the rudder area where it joins
stick the hull back together ,then grab your screws and dab marine grade silicone on them and screw them in.

I then sanded and bogged the outside of the seems and also bogged the screw holes.
it takes probly 20mins to do it all and you will never have a drop of water inside the hull.

Justin,

Obviously, keeping water out of your surfer (Or at least minimising and containing it) is the hardest and most important part of rc surfing.
The NQD board has several places that leak very badly and these problems must be overcome to build a surfer that will last.

Answers to many of your questions can be found within this blog.

Good Luck.

But with careful attention, your Kyosho Lisa should be a bit easier to keep dry as it does not have so many leaks to start off with.

Cananzi,
No, I threw them all in the bin.
One stock doll escaped the bin and soI gave it to Danburg.

I do not use them as I have a lotta Dudes.

But, I bet the chopped down one is way better than the standard "Super Model", lol.
Those stock China dolls are way too tall and top heavy for my liking.

I am pretty certain Seb has been using a cut down one for a few months now.

I did send the Kyosho Doll to Surfergirl, she should have it by now but she has not been posting on the blog.
It would be nice if she would let us know if it has arrived and how it is going.
Maybe post a pic or two.

Where are ya Surfer Girl???

Sea ya.

Maui Surf,
That board is incredibly quick.
Have you changed the setup? Different motor? Bigger prop?? 4S???

You know what to do to get rid of the bouncing.
Just add a bit of meat through the underside of the tail to add lift.
Like the Kyosho boards have.

Man that thing is flying.

Plenty of swell coming over the next few days.
4.5m Fri morning but the wind might be a bit suss and the tides are really high at the moment.

Never know, we might get a run early.

The first thingi thought of when i saw it bouncing is how you and rainer fix yours from bouncingwith adding small bit of resin on the tail to bring the nose down, thanks for the tip i will try that.

cananzi with your awesom building skills you could build anything , i can see why shorter lisa works so well a lower center of gravity thus making it stable , in other words, it rips

ronky you are coming to maui ,we got tohook up so you can try my surfers i am going to email my number to you . i hope theirare some waves when you are here.

ItsaFish,

Your link to the stuff about motors, batteries, ESC's, Prop Sizes etc. gave me a clue as to why I have been breaking cables.
It says to set the drive dog a little bit back from the stuffing tube because the cable compresses under power.

I have been setting it up against the tube like Barrels told me to, so when it compresses it puts a lot of strain on the cable where it enters the coupler and that is probably why the cables have been snapping off at the the coupler.

I now have one installed with the drive dog set back from the tube about the width of the cable as that guy advises so hopefully they won't break so often anymore.
I have not tried the board since I changeitbut I think this will help to minimise stress on the cable.

I will let you know if this helps prolong the life of the cable.

Thanks for the link bro.

Sea ya.

Jimi I actually thought to mention that about gap same size as diameter of cable but just asuumed you knew.sorry mate.hope that makes all the difference. I'm gonna get .150 cable setup as soon as o s e gets all the parts back in stock. Seriously considered solid shaft but I might try puttin a slight bend in the stuffing tube to get the prop aiming less down angle as I think this will help to reduce bounce issue, when I get this thing going I'll have changed enough stuff that I won't know what's done what so hahaha hopefully it rips str8 away, hahaha as if , still a few weeks away but gettin closer

There is heaps of great info all over the forums ya just gotta look for it ,fast electrics is a good
one for us

happy building guys

sick board Maui what is that one
4s if so what kv are you runnin mines got 2300 so high rpm

cheers guys

Wooooooooooooooo!!!!! After 6 months of ongoing work and set backs I ran my 1st full pack without any breakdowns. I didnt have any problems with the new shaft after the 1st two jammed up, I just made sure it was completely greased up and rotated it as i inserted it- thanks Cananzi! There were a few drops of water that got in but nothing major. The only real problem was the lifeguard telling me off for having a "motorized toy" in the swimming area lol. Iwill now work on the centre of gravity so it doesnt bounce around as much.

yeah it went pretty sweet, it was kinda choppy, and quite a bit of swell but I had plenty of power to get out to the back. Caught a few waves and did a few airs as well. just need to practise with the steering a bit.

hey guys

Had some funny **** happen today.

took the 3s out for a spin after weighting it differently. the thing does beautiful carves now am really happy with it becuase it looks realistc when it turns ,it really leans in to the turns.

well i had it out in 3ft shoreys, very heavy slamming surf. the glare was so bad i could hardly see the surfer between sets as it bopped up n down inbetween. i lost site of it becuase i was surfing from around 50-100ms away. Ended up losing it for half hour till i spotted it drifting out to sea lol.

the bilinga surf life savers where onto it and the guy was going to swim out till he relised how dam far it washe ended upradio the jetski to go and rescue it hahahah It was like bondi rescue material classic.

i knew all those donations ive been making over the past 2 years would come back around.
