John great thread, really enjoy this stuff. i still remember your BVMF-100 and all the great painting and weathering tipsI got to see in the flesh.
can you bottom line something? What is the largest diameter wheels you can put in this model (and I assume the razor back version). they look so much better with the bigger wheels, i am just curious. I want a big gasser warbird but I don't know where to start, this thread helps a lot.

Well looks like I better get my patience up on this one...

actually that is probably good for me I can get my yellow twin F-18 to the paint shop before it comes if I try real hard
I know guys get bent having to wait for Horizon stuff but the one thing I have learned is you guys get your stuff dialed in and it's better for us in the end
The Habu 32 was the same deal.... it took forever to show up, but once it did it's a really nice ARF. Same is happening with the F-4 now
So I'm pre paid on this one and will just wait it out

Guys
For those who do not like to weld,
How about this one for a pitot tube, a 1|4" dowel and scracht piece for the fin. I did use the body of the one supply with the plane, just cut off the round point right at mark and with a dremel take off the inside, with a round sander give shape to both sides of the pitot tube, testor silver paint, and there u have it. I merely light sanded the dowel to fit inside the antenna.

As most of you know RCU has had some serious upload issues over the past few weeks. I tried no less than 3 different times to upload this next series and failed miserably. It seems everything is back in check and working well. So here we go and lets hope the uploads work.
In making the inner wheel doors functional it was actually pretty easy and takes about 2 hours per door max once I figured out the main recipe.
You will need the following:
A dremel tool as listed earlier in the thread.
A 409 Dremel Cutoff wheel.

I dug out the inner wheel doors and scuffed the inside of each door with some sand paper. I wanted to make sure the epoxy would stick well to them while I glued the hinges on. Also I found some 1/16" plywood that I would be able to make the door horn out of for the clevis to hook too. I used a JR DS285 Sub Micro servo to actuate the gear doors. They fit in the wheel well very nice and work well.
pic #1 shows the parts laid out for the hinges that will be used on the inner doors.
pic #2 shows the tools used to cut the notches in the inner doors. The perma grit files from Bob Violett Models, a pair of trimming scissors and a razor blade.

Next we need to prepare the wheel well area for the door hinges. This is easier than you think and only takes a couple of minutes.
pic #1 shows the removal of the inner lip. Remove all of this wood and sand flush with the main door outline.
pic #2 shows using the #409 cutoff wheel to cut a notch for the door hinges in the wing structure. There is a piece of 3mm plywood glued to the wing sheeting in this area. You will want to split the difference when you grind the round slot for the hinges. Take your time and stabilize the wing in a vertical position. With your dremel cut slowly and before you know it the cuts are done. I cut down to the shaft of the mandrel that the cutoff wheel is mounted too.

Time to fit the door!!
pic #1 shows the installing of the hinges into the slots made in the wing. The door is being set in place to check for operation.
pics #2 and #3 show the door in place and fit to the wheel well opening. You may rotate it through the full travel to verify operation and no binding.

It is now time to fit the servos to actuate the gear doors. I used a square piece of balsa that was 3/8 of an inch thick as the base to mount the servo to. I sanded a slight contour to the side of the balsa that matches the airfoil. Servo is mounted using a servo tape. The arm is a standard JR arm using the longer side of the arm and the outer hole. The balsa block is the same size as the servo case and butts up against the spar and inner rib. It places the servo to about the perfect location for the door operation. The pushrod is 2-56 threaded rod and uses (2) Hayes Clevis's for actuation. Any clevis can be used; I just grabbed some out of my box.
I adjusted the servo linkage to where I was driving the servo at 140 - 150% of travel for total travel. I also used the DX18 gear door sequencer to sequence the gear door operation to the main retracts. This makes it easy and you do not require any additional radio accessories to complete the system. Also you will need to position the servo for the left wheel well door as shown in these photos. The servo for the right wheel door is positions forward of this door with the arm swinging over the back side of the servo. By setting the servos up this way I did not need to use separate channels for each door servo.

Now take some of your Plastruct and build up the gear door to match the pictures just like we did for the main gear doors. Make sure to forma slight curve in them to match the airfoil. Paint it zinc chromate yellow and install for that final look.

Also, I will probably be using my 9503, so can you recommend a easy to use gear sequencer?

Hey John,
Thanks for the Info! I really like the way you’ve done the inner gear doors.
Electric retracts and doors are definitely the way to go, no more pluming air lines, installing door cylinders, messing with valves, hunting for leaks, and forgetting to pump up the system before takeoff (oops!).[:@]

Yes that is the Zinc Chromate Yellow primer from Aircraft Spruce and Specialty. It takes a few coats but works well. I am a happy camper!!!
For everyone else here is a teaser of the riveting on the stab. Main fuselage is done and I am working on the wing. She is coming alive with great looks.
