RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Hey Jim, where did my Ulti go. You are absolutely right. Came in low and slow, pulled nose up into a hover with full smoke on, in a second it was gone. Powered straight up to get out of it. Sweet.
On another note, now that it is done. I did the wing joiner mod, no brainer. Also changed out the main wheel's, no foamie's for me. Plus a new tail wheel assembly will be installed, stock seem's way to squirly for me. The only other thing I think should be mentioned is, when installing the top wing leave the cabane bolt's a half turn loose to help line up the aluminum wing rib. Once the wing is on/asssembled and secured, tighten up the cabane bolt's.
This is one agile, fast, slow, everything, capable bird.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I read where you stated you're running a 23 x 8 prop. How's it's ground clearance?
If needed, you can add some extra with my mod for that.....

It's close but I'm ok with it. The gear I got with mine are composite and Iadded the tensioner's. So it stand's straight and tall. I do like your mod and may use it in the future.

Well the Ultimate is no more. And in all the carnage the top wing did not break nor did the landing gear. In the pic you can actually see thetop wing on the left side of the bed.

I had the last of the second galllon in it at the time. So it was just getting enjoyable. Near as I can tell the throttle servo froze up. Assuming that thatcreated excessive load and caused power shortage to the rest. Really hard to tell for sure because I was not flying it at the time. It will be replaced here shortly. To sweet of a plane to not have one.

Thank's for the support guy's. But taking into consideration the mfg only call's for 50oz I'm going with Futaba 3010's. I have those on a 20cc profile and do very well with the size of control surface on it. If it don't go well with this ultimate I will let you all know and you all can say you told me so. I have a number of gas powered and never had a servo fail because of nylon gear's. We'll see with this one.
Again Thank's, Robert

I feel your pain as well.
It's never good losing a plane and especially one that is this much fun
At least your replacing it
I'm not sure of that engine and the throttle servo you used, but if there is a throttle return spring on the throttle, unhook it from the throttle but do not remove it as it helps keep the throttle plate centered in the carb, these springs are usually pretty strong, as springs of that size goes and can overload a standard torque servo, say 50 to 60 ounces, pretty quick

Thank's Ifly. I don't know if you meant the insert as a "SEE". But the stupid thing on my part is the throttle and choke is / was some very old servo's.
That will not happen again. Lesson learned.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
acerc,
Sorry for your loss. If it makes you feel any better I am on my second Ultimate. The first died when the receiver antenna broke right at at the receiver, inside the rubber support - I could not actually see the break just looking at it. I figured I dumb thumbed it in until the next year when I range tested the new Bipe and it would not control after 5 feet.

Bill, The engine is sweet, plenty of power, smooth idle and transition. As for the spring, this one only requires 8oz to operate. I test every carb spring for draw weight. That should not even be a thought for a 57oz servo. Most servo's will see 8oz of load in flight at neutral. On the choke I do remove the spring, and I really like having it operate via the radio.
Thank's everyone for the kind word's. A new one has been ordered. It should be here by next Friday.

A1PCFIXER I bought a pitts style muffler for my Ultimate. It fits my DLE 55 but it is to big for the plane. It hits the bottom of the firewall. What pitts style muffler will fit this plane

huntndux,
J-Tec pic here and they do not need a bracket to prevent cracking..... this DLE 55is mounted with 3 inch extensions which gives ample clearence between the muffler and firewall........ I tried 3 different pitts style mufflersbefore settling with the J-Tec, a couple I tried were offset to one side slighly and not centered in porportion the the motor/fuse if viewed from the frontof the plane andpoorer quality metal and weld joints. A flybud ofmine has a Slimline theworks well withthe Ulti too.......

Re-set your throttle linkage as needed.

As for the choke, I'm a cheap ******* and go simple, using a pull rod.
But as always, to each their own, ymmv, etc., etc., etc.

Did the LG mod this afternoon and also using the stiffer GP Extra 300 LG, works very well.....used a pull, pull rudder attachements on the ends of the lines that connect to the springs so the tension on the cabels is adjustable.......

Those are the GPPerformance Series Extra 300 LG which areupgraded, more rigid and identical to the gear used on the Ulti. Visually no difference and the mounting holes are also identical. GP used a denser material on the Extra 300 LG when they realized the Ulti, using larger gas motors, was a having minor issue's with it's stock LG. Can be had for about 15 bucks thru GP.........
