Make sure your gaskets are lined up correctly. They have a small hole that allows a pulse of air coming from the crank case that lines up with a hole in the carb. Sounds like thats your problem. As you said your only running on the fuel provided from the choke.

By gaskets he means the one between the carb and the intake manifold. That's an easy check. If he went over the carb your screen should be clean. Carbs are simple things to fix. I've fixed hundreds of them.
A likely problem is.. Dick's been dead for a while. Your diaphragms are probably dry and stiff. Open your hi speed needle out a full turn and try again. You didnt say what your hi and lo needle adjustments were. Around 1 1/8 to 1 1/5 is a good place to start.
Keep us posted.

Some of these older pre electronic ignition engines are very difficult to get running by hand propping bc you can get the prop spinning fast enough for a proper spark over more than 1 or 2 revolutions. They also need to be really primed well. If your carb, fuel and kill switch are all ok, then trying an electric starter will definitely save your arm!

OK 2 on the low and 3/4 on the high dont seem right. Try 1 1/2 on both sides as a starter. I think your rebuild is ok if the engine ran after the new kit.
Invert is right, hand starting can be difficult on Non-Ignition engines. The problem is getting the fly wheel spinning fast enough go generate sufficient spark. If you have a friend with a starter reach out to him.
Dicks been dead well over a year me thinks..

Yes, the engine needs to be primed WET. The thing with the Byron reduction drive is that it's pretty easy to get the spark by hand propping since the mechanical advantage is there. A starter will make the job easier but at the trade off of ruining the paint on that precious plastic spinner. Back in the day (I'm an old fart now along with Bob H ) once primed wet the start up was only a couple of hand flips. Good luck, Mitch

RE: BYRON P51 wont start
On the Byron's setup, you are turning the engine twice as fast as you are flipping the prop so that is not a problem. G-38s and Q35-42 are easy to hand start. They do like be wet though. If you can choke it and it will run on the prime, things are probably assembled correctly. Make sure the pulse holes in the gaksets and insulator blocks are open, set the needles as advised earlier, and it might help to shoot some fuel in the carb to save on flipping. The carb may not have all of the air out of it yet from your rebuild.
