RE: Great Planes PT- 17 Stearman ARF
I am very amazed as to how much the engine contributes to the scale impression. Seeing it fly with the engine sound is so impressive. Amazing how it takes this ARF up about 3 notches!!!
Anybody got a used radial they'd like to peddle???

I would like to thank all those who have contributed to this forum and all those who directly helped me to build this beauty. This is my first ARF of this size and it was quite a challenge for me. All the info contained on these pages were invaluable to me.

I just got the Super Stearman new in the box. I have a Saito 1.25 will this engine fly the plane good? I’m not planning to do any extreme flying just the basics. I just love the sound of the 4 stroke engines.

+1, i have a magnum 120 with a kelao exhaust on mine and it flies just fine and sounds great, i don't do any extreme flying with mine either, thinking about switching the magnum with a saito 125 with kelao exhaust i have just to see which one sounds better you'll be fine

I have the saito 125 on mine. 1.) the muffler kept coming loose until I bought an all aluminum turbo muffler, (bought from the classified section here), and 2.) the plane was a little lame until I switched from a 16X6 to a 15X8 prop. Then the airplane became a dream come true.

I put a Saito 200 R3 3-cylinder radial engine on mine.... and it is a joy to fly..... but nowhere near as cool as Linkan2's UMS 7-35 radial engine.

RE: Great Planes PT- 17 Stearman ARF
I have been following this thread for a long time, even asked a few questions back in the day when I first considered this plane ('09 I think, then bought it in early 2010, not that I've been procrastinating or anything). After a move, a career change, and the fact I always said this would be the plane I would start to switch over to gassers with, I finally got it put together and have to say its a great flier. I actually bought the air frame for a G-26 I acquired, and thought a bit more power then it needs, its a perfect match. To attribute to its ability (and stability), I was able to pull off a low pass (first pic) close enough to the runway to keep the spectators from chiming in with the shouts of "lower - LOWER!" (You know who I' talking about!) I have to thank my friend Joe M. for the great photography work. The only real trick to flying this plane has been the take-offs. Its not your topical point and throttle with some right rudder. It seems it would prefer if the tail goes first, but what I have found is that if I can get it up on its mains long enough to get rudder authority, its OK, but the DUI taxi test with the tail wheel up until that point can be tricky! Its been fun following along and am glad to finally be able to contribute.

I went to an air show over the weekend. There were a few PT-17 Stearmans. One of them #40 kind of looked like a Super Stearman with ailerons on both wings and the fuselage was covered in metal but the engine cowl only covered part of the engine.

Number 40 is an N3N. Interesting plane, thanks for the pictures.

RE: Great Planes PT- 17 Stearman ARF
I ordered this ARF from Tower after looking for a bipe for my DLE 20. It arrived with the top right wing slightly damaged. Tower sent me a new top wing set at no charge ($99). They didn't even want the old ones back (Thanks Tower). The 17 did have the usual covering problems that most others have had. Not really that bad. Everything else looked good.
I'm going to try and see if I can fit a smoke pump and tank behind the firewall along with everything else. I try to always mount my ignitions on the outside of the firewall but have never thought about mounting the batteries there too. That's why you always check the threads. Lots of good idea's in here. I'll try to post some pics as I go along.

RE: Great Planes PT- 17 Stearman ARF
I got a used PT-17 from a fellow recently with a 25cc ROTO engine.
The plane flies amiably and I am happy with my purchase.
What is a source of concern is the climb tendency it displays under power.
Anything above 1/3 throttle has the bipe going up like a homesick angle.

I think that this is one of the older kits as the arrows on the struts indicating forward are on the wrong way.
Is this a trait of this model that everybody just lives with or is there something wrong with my incidences.
The engine is simply bolted onto the firewall with whatever thrust that gives.
It balances as per instructions.
Any input would be appreciated.
