Sherline sells the lathe by itself and with several different packages. The package I got has all the stuff in the photo. Should get me a good start.

The first question that pops into my mind, is do you know how to use that stuff. I am NOT being a smart butt; it is a fantastic machine, and will do just about anything you want it to, but it is a skill that takes practice, and know how.

When I was studying engineering, I took a part time job in an R&D company here. The first thing I did, was make acquaintance with the machinist, and got him to teach me how to use everything in the shop, so when I designed, I would have some idea of how what I was designing would be made. The education was worth more than a lot than what I learned in college. Even then, when I got my Sherline stuff, my usage was so seldom, that I would forget things. A paper back called "The Home Machinist's Handbook" by Doug Briney was a great refresher course.

SDP, your laminations came out great. The lathe should prove to be valuable and fun to use...

Les,

To answer your question....  No...  I have never used a metal lathe.  I plan to learn as I go.  With each kit I build I try and acquire new skills.  Painting, methods of assembly, covering types, and general building techniques.  Learning is something that I hope to never stop doing.  Will the new lathe completely change the way I build a plane, nope, but it will hopefully add to my capabilities.

I will definitely look up the book you mentioned, The Home Machinist Handbook.

Thanks for the info!

A book on gunsmith machining would be quite helpful ss well. I've found lots of techniques and skills cross over.

Thanks Vincent... The process was much easier with some added working time provided by the "right" glue for the job. I have some woodworking to do in the garage tomorrow, make a rack for my compartment organizers, but I may be able to get to building the elevators.

Well.. I didn't get to the elevators but I did get the little woodworking project I wanted to do done...

I made a box to hold the organizers I purchased. I also ordered six smaller organizers which I will create a similar box for.

Simple plyood construction with oak rails, nothing difficult.

I just threw some polyurethane on for good measure.

Hopefully all this effor will finally get all those nuts, bolts, screws, etc put into one place where they are easy to find.

Was fun making something with the bigger power tools for a change.

The Metal box holder looks great. I am be following how you make out wiht the lath. I have been thinking of getting one for awhile but was unsure if I would be able to use it. Yes there have been several times it would be handy to make parts for the 28C. Had a chance to buy an older dremel lath this summer but the Lady wanted to much for it. Wished now that I had purchased it.

Nice job on the storage organizer. Something I've wanted to do as well, tired of searching for something I know I have but can't find. Should be a real time saver. Is it secured to the table so it dosen't tip over?

No way!!! That's my building table!

The storage unit will be placed on a shelf. I like a clean table to work on. My OCD makes me totally clean off the table when each project is done. Every tool has it's place.

I had a meeting at the field this morning but upon my return I was able to unbox the lathe. There was some minor assembly that needed to be done, mostly installing the motor. What a nice machine! Each and every piece is very high quality.

The lathe needs to be bolted onto a board which I need to go get. Sherline recommends a pre-made shelf but I'm thinking maple. After that is done it will be ready to use. I should be able to get the board tomorrow and get it cut and stained. Some rubber feet will finish the setup.

I have a bunch of accessories which are not in the photo, like a compound tool rest, steady rest, center drills, and cutters.

This should be fun!

Don't forget the automatic cutter feed, for being able to cut threads.

Yup, got that too.

I have so much to learn!

The freezing cold outside has temporarily stopped the build. It is 37 degrees in my garage right now, a little cold for building.

Tomorrow I work on the elevators....

Today I went flying for the morning, freezing myself in the process. When I got home I installed the Lathe onto the wooden base I made for it. After that I fired it up for the first time. Runs really well.

Not wanting to completely waste my time I decided to dive right into something productive. I'll post this here even though it was a part for my Cub.

The little nose cone on my cub centers on a washer mounted to the front side of the prop. The problem I had with the stock washer is it did not fit the double jam nut style nut inherent to the Hacker A-60. The washer needed the inner hole enlarged to fit over the rabbit on the bottom of the nut. Not having the right equipment I had a flying buddy make one. His equipment was really old so he was not comfortable turning the inner edge, instead he found another washer that had the correct inner hole size then turned the outside down. His washer was never really correct due to it's tapered face but it did work.

As my first attempt at turning something I chucked up the original washer and bored out the inner hole. This was super easy with the new lathe and the parts fit perfect! While I was at it I also faced off the bottom of the nut, which protruded a little past the end of the washer. Now both parts are perfect! What fun!

The Original washer is on the left, the new one is on the right.

OK, Back to the Nieuport!

Work has started on the elevators. So far I have framed up the right side. I need to add the wood in the area of the control horn still. I an adding one extra piece of wood in that area to allow room for the Robart Hinges and the Dubro control horn I plan to use.

After the glue on this side dries I will build the second half over the same side of the plans, making sure both halves come out the same.

Love those laminations. Building the elevators/stab should be a piece of cake for you after the rest of the build!

Yup, they just dropped right into place!

Second Elevator is assembled and I'm just waiting for the glue to dry. After that I'll cut off the excess wood and sand both sides perfectly flat.

Now that I have the elevators built it is time to revisit the fuselage, specifically the tailwheel. I need to do a little research on the internet and find the right tailwheel. Once that is in my hands I can install the tailwheel mounting plate and finish up the rear of the fuselage. Once that is complete it is onto mounting the wings to the fuselage.

At this point most of the structures are built, they just need to come together as a whole.

Second elevator is off the building board and all trued up. Matches the first perfectly.

Now, the tailwheel gets addressed.

And.... No, that is not my wreath. That is the wife's project!

Mark, Your Nieuport is looking great! You are progressing nicely. I really need to get going on mine. Tailwheel is on its way so I should be able to get that sorted soon.

The tailwheel assembly should be here Wednesday but in the mean time I'm still keeping busy. Yesterday I whipped up another box to contain the smaller compartment drawers I ordered. This should just about complete "Operation Organize My Junk". All my bolts, fasteners, and screws will be in one place. I need to find someone with a label maker to mark each drawer with its contents.

Next Thursday thru Sunday is the Electric Festival at our field. Weather looks like it will make for a great time. Last year there were about 300 pilots attending so it is truly "Airplane Chaos". I cant wait!

For those in the area....

First time I have had the wings on since I painted them. If you look close you will see the pilot figure. Waiting to get some time in a local spray booth so I can clear coat it. Then will start to put the engine and hook up servo's.

SDP, I have a label maker and if you tell me what you want on each label I'll send it to you.

Mark that's one gorgeous plane!
