Half scale is pretty big, check out the Project Mammuth thread, that might give you ideas. As for 1/4 scale, you can use the same engines that are used in 1/5 scale. The higher end engines have more than enough power, so as long as your gearing is reasonable it will work fine. I don't know how much money you want to spend but there are a number of big block conversions for zenoah or CY engines out there, as well as some 60cc models out there. But unless your car is ridiculously heavy, a higher end modified CY or zen will do fine. There are also inline engines available.

If you want to do it on the cheap pick up an inexpensive or used weed whacker! 28cc and up.
I have seen them at Harbor Freight refurbished for well under $100. Toss everything that isn't needed and you have a nice engine to start with, clutch included.
I have picked up (ebay) several Ryobi's over the years for airplane use, usually for about $25 for a complete power head. 32CC in size.

i'm currently building a 1/4 scale foff jeep...will weigh about 40-45lbs...i've an obr 57cc twin going in it which will give close to the same hp per tonne as a full size at around 950. even though i'm sure a full mod 30.5 would spin the wheels to get the scale performance bigger is better imo.
for half scale i'd be thinking a 125cc and up, 2 stroke dirtbike or cart motor or a bigger 4 stroke

i was just seeing what other people recomended because if i find a bigger cheap motor i might put it on my go kart rc car. It currently has two 50cc two stroke pocket bike engines with cvt trannys they are kinda slow so i was seeing what else was out there. There are pics and a link to the vid on my other thread.

A big fat chainsaw would work with the right gearing as they have heaps of torque.
Or a motor from a demolition saw or something similar.
Anything 50cc or over.
Or you could look at a 2-stroke lawnmower motor.
They're usually 100cc or more.
It'll take some engineering though as you'll need to get a clutch on there.
Maybe something from a scooter with a cvt?
Gokart motor......?
Unless you wanna go 4-stroke and look at a Honda/Kawasaki motor or a Chinese knock-off one.
Depends how fast you want it to go and how much ya wanna spend....

Chinese minicross engine from a Thumpstar or equivalent. 4-stroke gas, 125cc, +12hp. Take the rotating assembly and put them into an old Honda Monkey 3-speed semiautomatic (clutchless manual). Then use a servo to engage gears with a 3rd or 4th channel. Will be enough power for a big and heavy model. Steering servos would need to be BEEFY to have sufficient torque and not burn up.

You could always go for a 46cc CY GP460

Speaking of chainsaws, I've been thinking about a custom project for a while. I was thinking about 2 chainsaw engines directly mounted via chain to rear drive wheels on independent swing arms.

Have you thought about the 100cc or 80cc motors they run on race go carts? They have tons of power and only one gear. Yamaha is one of the most common but that's something to look into.
