Default Toxic oil...

Guys,

I have been wondering about this for a while and another thread has given me the urge to ask...

Can someone please explain the real toxic danger of Aeroshell 500 (and the like)?

I have to say, we:

Stand out in the sun all day long...(skin cancer)

Surround ourselves with dozens of running turbine engines...(Toxic exhaust fumes no matter what the oil)

Walk around the pits with a cigarette dangling from one's mouth asking for some safe turbine oil...(Smoking)

Planning for evening cigar parties and holding giant BBQ cookouts (lung and colon cancer) ETC ETC ETC

So...I have to ask...is this big hub bub about toxic oil kind of like the Global Warming craze...someone out there creating an issue so they can profit off of it? It seems to be like ordering a Diet Coke to go with a Big Mac and large fries...

Agree that we are exposed to a lot of unavoidable toxic substances..

However we can help ourselves avoiding organophosphates and bigmacs.

Beave,
Here's the MSDS for Aeroshell 500.
Isn't it amazing what you can find in 10 seconds on Google?

Harley,

From what that said...I think...is that my Brute 33 is just as harmful as Aeroshell 500.

Hmmmm...maybe I'll splash some on for the awards banquet...lol!

More Big Macs please!

Organo phosphate poisoning can have very serious health implications. Individual sensitivity varies greatly, you treat it with contempt at your own risk, once you develop symptoms it's too late.

Anyone doubting this should talk to my best mate, a former B757 captain who was positively diagnosed with OP poisoning following exposure to oil fumes, the 757 is a known problem aircraft for this. He lost his licence and his general health is not good.

The oil companies are, of course, playing this down, they potentially have a lot to lose.
Like many things in aviation, a little care and thought can reap real benefits. I try to avoid direct contact with these oils.

(Edit - David we posted at almost the same time, I started the post but then looked up the link attached below that is exactly what you brought up)

It's potentially nasty stuff in all scenarios - but especially nasty when heated and misted. It's a neurotoxin essentially. While you don't want it on your skin what you really don't want to do is breathe in oil vapor. What is oil vapor? My feeling is it is NOT just the smell of model turbine engines running on mixed fuel but rather a much higher dose of the oil that would be presented in full scale aircraft scenarios where you might, for example and among other examples, have an oil seal blow and oil smoke enter the cabin (and some other complicated cases of oil contamination) OR in MODEL AVIATION, if you are not careful and you do get a lot of skin contact... and also stand behind the exhaust and get direct warm air exhaust blast and oil residue on your skin all the time....

In other words, I suspect the threat is not one specific case of exposure (IN MODEL AVIATION) but more likely a long term case of small exposures due to careless handling, etc. Wear gloves when mixing and be careful. There is a plethora of documentation on the aeromedical effects of vaporized turbine oil done by some British pilot associations and also the Aussies. Most controlling agencies would like to pretend it's not a quantifiable risk factor in professional aviation but it is - and it also is in model jets.

Used automatic transmission fluid is regarded as toxic.

I have seen it mixed with diesel and used as smoke oil.

I do not want to be around when that smoke is blowing through.

Absolutely, but if we help ourselves using the available info, the better. IMHO.

So stop using organophosphates and eat more vegetables!

Yep, nothing is a problem.

Until, one day a doctor gives you some bad news & then it becomes YOUR problem.

Bottom line is alternatives without the organophosphates are available, they work just fine
(despite what some manufacturers want you to believe) & in most cases are cheaper.

Common sense would say just use an alternative. But, as they say, common sense is not that common.

Jetcat makes a 'safe' oil but, at least in Oz, no one can find it.

Kingtech makes their own blend of oil.

David Gladwin has mentioned an oil without the nasties, Amsoil of some type (perhaps he can expand on what type).

A few manufacturers allow the use of two stroke oils.

I just use Mobil DTE light.

I'm sure there are others. For some reason because we use 'jet' engines some people think we need to use 'jet' oil.
We don't even use it as the makers intended it to be used. We really just use it like a total loss 2 stroke oil.

Jet Central recommends Amsoil 2 stroke Dominator ( http://www.amsoil.com/msds/tdr.pdf ) if you don't want to use turbine oil. It only causes cancer in California[:-].

Working on the fullscale stuff you cant help but take a bath in oil every now and then. I have been around every oil their is for turbines pretty much and the only oil that messes with me is Mobil 2380. Makes my eyes swell up and itch and irritates my skin. But all other oils do nothing including other mobil products. The one lubricant I cant stand is by far the worst to deal with in aviation is skydroll! I hate that crap. You get it on you and it stays for days even after multiple showers.

With models its not like we fly a whole lot and have big engines with wet gear boxes. So our exposure with models is very minimal so cant see what all the fuss is about.

Beave [8D]

I hear you Beave. There are dangers everywhere.

When I go to the field,..

I put a hat, sunnies and SF 30 on, if the sun is out. (The aussie sun can turn you into a prawn in 10 minutes flats.)

I stay up wind of any running engines.

I get really REALLY mean to anybody smoking a cigarette anywhere near me, ESPECIALLY in the pits.

And I stay as far away as possible from cigars. (Personally I hate the smell)..

I am partial to a juicy rare steak with a strip of crispy fat though… (But, as I’m over 50, my doctor and I have an intimate relationship, colon wise).

The “carcinogenetic” oil we use is probably at the lower risk of hazard at the flying field, but it is pretty easy to manage. All it takes is a little care when handling. Personally I am more concerned with the fuel and the stink it creates. My wife hates it..
