I have been doing the finish work on this wing panel. Mounted the aileron and not much caring for the amount of wood I had to cut out to get it to go on. The black line is the hinge center point and the arrow is the tube and rod that make up the hinge pivot/support/whatever it's called. I will fix the gap but for the next three I will pre-cut the pieces of the leading edge assembly prior to gluing together. The first pics is the current ail with the mega gap. The second is a template I made to cut the others by as they are assembled.

The plans only call for the carbon/glass ribs to be installed. I added a basswood filler/spacer and another rib on each side for the sheeting and fabric to contact. With this extra lamination the total rib is wide enough I don't think it is compromised with the hinge cut out. But it still needs filled a bit on the outsides so as to not been seen.

Ah, the beauty of hind-sight! Now I know what to look for when building my SR9.
Can you give us some other angles so I can see it a little better? That's a sweet design!

Ah, yes!  Nice.  I like it.  I can understand now why you added the filler and ribs.  Thanks!

Threads seem dead tonight. I could not finish the right wing, needed to sand the L/E and put the last L/E cap on but it drizzled rain all evening. So I commenced to cut out pieces in prep for the left wing, even glued the first rib in place.

Very well then. More assembly of the lower left wing. Took longer to mow the field today so a later start on the build.

After finishing up the framing on the left panel I went back and finished the right panel. Which consisted of the final leading edge and four composite washers/spacers. The washers are under the tape so I laid one on top to see.

Very light it is Anthony, they say the finished product will hit 50lbs. Well I just had a nice run in with how well wood glue holds. The piece for the flying wires were in wrong (black arrow), mount on wrong side of the bay. So I just spent the last hour or so cutting it loose, and it was not coming back out easily. Red arrow is where it is supposed to be.

Everything cleaned up real well, so I just turned those pieces around the right way and glued them back in.

Robert,
Next time try using a Monokote heat gun and see if it will soften the glue for you. I have done the same in the past when I made a Boo Boo Actually it was on the strut mounts on my 1/3 Cub turned 180 just like yours, go figure.
Later!!

Anthony I thought about that about half way thru the first one.  But also worried about that heat softening the surrounding joints. But now, knowing that you did it, I will remember that for next time.

Robert,
A lot of guys are now using wood glue to attach their sheeting to wings. They spread the glue onto the sheeting and let it dry then iron the wood down over the wing. The heat softens the glue just enough to let it reactivate and adhere the sheeting to the structure underneath. Pretty neat trick.

When I did remove those pieces I did scrape everything clean and re-glue. I used the thin nozzle on the heat gun to direct all the heat to the ply plates to keep from over heating the neighboring joints.
Later!!

Anthony, not wanting to sound like a know it all so I am attaching a reference to past work of mine. Page 18, post 430 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11...18/key_/tm.htm  . I have been ironing sheeting for some time now. Came across the idea here on RCU way back.

Know it all! LOL, just kiddin. You talking about tight bond? Sounds like a cool trick. I'd like to try that. Seve.

Making great progress Robert. Top notch work! I've never used the method described to attach sheeting to wings, sounds interesting, especially in areas where the sheeting may be thin and the glues water content warps the wood...I'll need to try it! Is it as strong as the conventional method?

In my experience the Titebond is just as strong with the ironing method. And the water added does help curve the sheeting. So far I have used it with balsa wood as thick as 3/16 with great results. The thicker the wood the longer it takes for the heat to go through. When first starting the covering I will hold my finger on the bottom side of the sheeting to get a count of how long until I can't hold there for the heat. It is a real nice and relatively easy method.

I will definatly give it a shot. I try to stay away from CA whenever possible, and I'm always willing to try something new. Thanks for the good idea Robert.
