RE: Pitts S1-S by EMHW
Thank's guys! I am enjoying figuring this one out. Like this morning, trying to get the wing parts laid out and ready is a real task. I know the rib that butts the fuse should be at a 3degree angle and on the plans it shows the rib tilted. And it also does not show the orientation of the first three ribs in regards to the holes for the tube, so I used the tube and stacked the three ribs to find the right orientation for the dihedral.

That is a thread on RC Groups. I have a replica of that thread here on RCU, http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11...m.htm#11328170

I have sanded all the parts and dry fitted. All looks good so next is to glue them. The servo gets mounted in a rib (second pic) but this seems a bit weak to me being as they call for such high torque. Instead of reinforcing the rib I will make a servo tray after the wing is built. This will also get the servo closer to the wing bottom and thus keeping a short servo arm. I am sure all of you are aware of the fact that as the servo arm is lengthened the available torque from the servo goes down. And most servos torque is rated at 1" from center. So I try to keep the arm at 1" or shorter if possible.

Well your imagination must not be like mine. I always imagine things worse than they are, so I am seldom disappointed. I am making some headway on this section of wing. Once it is done I will know much better how to build the other three sections.

It is a bit different than most kit's that is for sure. And I hope your right Anthony, all day for one wing panel and it's not done. The lack of instructions and the desire not to cut something wrong has led the past hours search for which size of lumber they are using for the wing tip lamination. And just a couple of minutes ago I found there gallery, went into it, found a photo of the tip and enlarged it. No wonder I could not find any info on the lamination of the tip, they used a dowel. (Insert a few choice words here)!

Still Robert in the end you will end up with the plane of your dreams. Enjoy the process, you knew going into this project the challenge wasn't going to be the build but the lack of instructions or should I say the lack of instructions in English. I love the plans and the quality of the wood looks to be top notch. You'll figure things out, you always do.

A plane of my dreams for sure Vincent. And I hope no one takes my comments as complaining, far from it, I am thoroughly enjoying the build. I am just letting those whom may be interested in one of these kits know quite well what they are in for. I have no doubt that I could treat this like a scratch build and it would turn out great but at the price for this kit I do not want to waste any (buy more) of the wood. Believe it or not that is my only issue. I have a dowel soaking, waiting for it to get flexible, well, more flexible. I did go ahead and install the servo per the plans. They designed it this way so it must work. And the servo near bouts butts up to the wing strut so the servo arm can barely be seen.

Now to let it dry. Balsa would have been much easier but with this hardwood dowel the wing tip will definitely be ding resistant. With the soaking time, then the drying time, then the epoxy drying time, this wing tip is probably the only thing getting done today. LOL

Whew, got a little behind and just got caught up. Glad to see I don't have to use my imagination again.
Mighty fine job, Robert. I was wondering about the servo mounting, if it wasn't strong enough would they have left it designed that way? In my way of thinking, changing it would be more of a preference than a necessity.
Take care,
David

Thank's David. And I agree with you on the servo, but there was one other factor in my thinking of changing it. The way it is, factory installed position, if I ever need to replace it, it will be a pain. But of course then I thought, when was the last time I had to replace a servo, never.

I had to replace a servo once. Granted it was a used plane with a bottom of the line servo. I don't recall exactly what was wrong but it was replaced more as a safety precaution, a lot less money than an entire aircraft!

Well apparently that dowel was not wet enough. I was sitting here and heard a very faint pop. It snapped, so now I have another one soaking. I will give it time to turn to a noodle this go around.

While that is drying I made the aileron's frame work. And I have been thinking of the servo access panel. And I know I will hear about this one, but, I don't think I am going to put an access panel. I have never had to replace a servo and even if the need should arise it would not be that big of a deal to make one then. And I am also considering running the top wing servo lead down through the strut, it is hollow fiberglass, and attach it to the lower wing servo lead prior to running to fuse.

WHAT???!!! Are you crazy???!!! [X(] You know you asked for it, right?
Actually that sounds... well... sound to me. Good logic. But you know that you WILL have to access it now that you are going to seal it in, don't you? I know this guy by the name of Murphy that will see to it.

I'm more worried about Robertitis than ole Murphy. Just for sake of showing something the wings leading edge sheeting has been applied. As well as some L/E sheeting on the ailerons, which it did not call for just made me more comfortable.
