I have a set of Dave platt plans from 1966 that are 100%scale. They are NOT what pica sells, their plane is 20% scale. I spoke on the telli with dave a while back about this subject. Since they are from 66, there is lot left to the builder to make from scratch. I blew them up from the original 60-some span to 85. Its a biggun. Nick. No building started yet

Hi Gary, This is a T-28 i built for the bi-centinial using a navy prototype paint scheme that was published by Scale R.C. Modeler in the mid 70s. The kit was Dave platt's before he sold the rights to Pica.

Both are great looking planes. I have had the pleasure of meeting the Master, Dave Platt a few times and can say he is one of the finest builders and finishers I have ever known. His weathering techniques are fabulous. Love those black art tapes. Keep them comming Dave.
I have learned a ton watching those tapes.

Hey, Gary
Looks like you are doing a great job on the byron. Couple of questions. What twin are using, how much down thrust is in the Byron kit, and let me know how the exhaust comes out as I will be using a twin as well. I have a BME 105 on the shelf, its a little much, but I have it. Would like to use the old Z74 twin if I could find one at a reasonable price.
Thanks
JohnnyO

Johnny, The engine is a custom built engine by Phill Sphear of Canton, ohio. It uses Sachs 2.4 cylinders and pistons. It has been destroked to a 4.6 cu. in. instead of a 4.8 cu.in. The over square set up makes it rev like crazy. The engine has been massaged by Jim Cline of Cline & associates. He converted it to glow. yes those are glow plugs in her. I have never had the engine drop a cylinder or quit in flight due to glow plug failure. I change them once a year. I run it on a mixture of alcohol and about 5 oz.s of Klotz oil, recommend by Cline. The engine is almost ten years old and many hours of flying but looks brand new inside and out. It turns a Menz 22/10 at a little over 8,000 RPMs. Should haul this bird with authority. As for the down thrust. this is built in to the model by way of there engine mount system. which sets it between 4 and 5 degrees down thrust such as the full scale aircraft.
Will be mailing the muffler plugs to Bold mufflers next week.
By the way, this kit was produced by Iron Bay.
Designed by Byron models.
I was lucky, in that when I recieved the kit they had the landing gear in stock and I grabbed it up, along with the wheels and brake system . Can't wait to see that nose dip when the brakes are applied.
I'll be able to taxi out, turn into the wind and do a mag check before take off. Saw Greg Hahn do this with his B-25 during a scale contest. that was really scale.

Hello all, been working on the Trojan. Here is a pic of the fuse ready for paint sitting on her wheels. another pic shows all the control surfaces, and flying surfaces glassed and recieving their second coat of resin to fill the weave in the cloth. I first sanded with 150 dry to get the high spots then to 220 wet to finally 320 wet. Then I applied the second coat of resin to the glassed pieces of the plane. After final sand before primer, I will cut out trim tabs and remount to control surfaces. Once the panel lines and rivets are on I will install the small pushrods and rod covers. Due to now being very cold here in the frozen North of Ohio. I will have to wait till spring to do the painting. My buddies have talked me into using nothing but latex paint including the primer. I will show step by step the procedues that I use. My buddy F4you and Fokker have both used this method to produce great looking models of a Corsair and a P-40 Warhawk. Guess who built the Corsair? LOL
Have a great holiday all my flying buddies!
Well back to the two composite ARF Mustangs. The parts just arrived by the Brown Santa sleigh. You did know that Santa wears a Brown suit didn't you? And he comes more than once a year if you are nice.
LOL

Gary, lookn good. Got a question if you don't mind. What is the length / width of the Byron canopy. Length measured from the front of the canopy, not the windscreen, to the very end of the lexan. Thinking it might be easier to use the Byron with a few mods than make a plug and pull units.

It measures 28 7/8 " in total length, and measures 8 3/8" wide at the front of canopy. Man, I didn't realize how big this dude is! It's about 7" tall. I had Aaron at Iron bay pull it with there thickest clear plastic to make it stronger. tough to cut though...LOL, but worth the effort.

Hi everyone, hope you all had a wonderful holiday. Karl of Bold mufflers has informed me that my custom mufflers are all most done. He has sent me construction photos as he has progressed. When he's finished I will post the photos of the custom mufflers he has made for the T28.

It is a custom made engine by Phil Sphear. It is a 4.6 cu.in. twin, using Shachs 2.4 cu. in. cylinders and pistons. The engine has been coverted to run on alcohol by engine Guru Jim Cline. The engine will turn a 22/10 8000 RPM's Engine weighs less than four pounds. This should pull it smartly through the air.

They arrived! Karl of bold mufflers has already finished and shipped the custom mufflers and they arrived last night. I was worried if they would fit, due to him not seeing the engine or the airplane. All he had to go on were pictures I sent him and the wooden plugs. Well I guess I will never have to worry about Karl getting it right. They were near perfect!! All I had to due was tweek the stacks a little and cut them to length. Fantastic. I have worried more about getting the exhaust right more than anything else. Now as soon as the weather breaks I can get this bird primed, detailed, and painted. Thank you again Karl. I guess I sound like a comericial for Bold mufflers, but his work is that good and that fast! Don't get that combination very often in this hobby. I know for sure he is going to make my exhaust for my Mustang.
The mufflers are made from 1/8" aluminum and the cans weigh about 10.5 oz. @ so my engine and mufflers weigh in at about 5&3/4 pounds. Excellent.
Here are a few photos of the system.

That looks fantastic Gary. I'm amazed at the quality work the warbird crowd continually produces. Great job!

Wow, a glow converted 80cc twin...any idea what fuel consumption will be?

Looking great, Gary. I would love for him to make me a set for my Byron Trojan too. Hope he kept the plugs, etc.

The twin is not a new engine. It is approx. 10 years old now. it flew my Frank Noll Jr. One design for nine years. It will go through 32 oz. of alcohol in aprox. 18-20 min. Throws a 22/10 Menz around 8000 RPM's. Very easy to start, and have never had a cyl. drop out or the engine quit due to glow. Plugs last forever.
Karl does have the plugs.
