Default Hacker C50 14XL vs. 13 XL, which is best?

I'm looking for another electric motor for my plane #2. My plane #1 already has a Hacker C50 14XL competition motor, and works perfectly, but I wonder if a 13XL is better to this one. In which conditions a 13XL is preferred over a 14XL?

They both work well - I've flown both in the same airplane and looked at performance on a test bench with various props. There isn't a huge amount of difference, the 13 turns a few more RPM and draws a few more amps. The most noticeable differnce in flight is quicker acceleration. Probably a little more speed available also.

The 20C batteries now available will make a larger difference than changing motors, the 14 Comp / 20C combination has excellent performance and feels stronger than the 13 with std batts - haven't flown the 13 Comp / 20C combination but expect super accel.

Earl:

What kind of battery consumption are you getting with the 20c set up; say on the F sequence in wind?

The F07 flights at Crowley (you were there) were 2800 & 3000 (typically 2700 - 2800 with reg packs). If you fly the same as with 10-15C packs the consumption will be the same. Very easy to over do it though - the first few times I flew them P07 flights were 4000 where typically they average 3400. Nice to know the extra power / speed is there if you need it.

Xavier,
I liked very much this picture, it's a really good club of aeromodelling no?...[X(]
I have these engines and works very well but I prefere 14XL for the durability of my batteries.
This plane is " milenio "???

Thanks Earl, that's very good information. I just have one question, if nothing else is changed and the motor delivers more power that means these new batteries have less internal resistance. That's the only way that with the same circuit and same voltage you can get more current. Is that correct?

Hi Rombaut, thanks, yes that's a picture of me landing my Milenio. These is one of our flying sites its about 9000 feet of altitude, our is Club de Aeromodelismo Quito. Did you go to Ireland 2001? I think we met there.

Yes. Draw a supply box and put a battery and a series resistor inside. Then draw a load box with a resistor inside and connect this load to the other box to complete an electrical circuit. If you lower the value of the resistor in the supply box you will get more voltage across the load resistor and therefore more current.

Correct - the 20C batts have significantly less internal resistance. Jim's description says it well. For a given current the voltage will be higher or for a given voltage more current will be delivered - either way you look at it more watts are available.

Hi Joan, well the situation is a little better for us, but it's still as far as Europe from here. For you Argentina is really far right?

Saludos
Juan
