Did you all cut the hole in the Te of the wing for the flaps operating rod 3/8 by 3/4 ?That leaves hardly any wood to supprt the Te Is that a typo or is the Te not structual?

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
NO...I too thought that was a poor way to actuate the flaps...I remember early in the forum posts that someone said that it was diffacult to get the flaps to operate with that flimsy 1/16 inch ply tab. I can not imagine a 30 lb aircraft flaps lasting very long with that setup...I instead used the same type control horns similar to the ailerons..I ran the control push rods outside the wing skin just like the ailerons...much stronger and work very well.

Hi asumut, My prop is 20 inch And I'm using a G62 I havent run the engine with the prop yet so I 'm not sure what rpm I'm getting this was the diameter the guys at solo props recomended for my engine and plane.
I mocked it all up yesterday and it looks like it should come in about 28 or 29 lbs dry weight

let me know what rpm you end up with as I am only just starting to build the fuz. I have completed the wings and tail feathers except for covering.
cheers

solo props are variable pitch. you have problems running scale props on glow engined but large gs engines can handle it.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
i used the RCSB forum metod and ran a seperate servo to each cection and a match box to insure unison. I agree that ply tab isw not going to hold up. But TF expects us to monokote and go minimal scale detail to keep the wt down. Well didnt thney habg bombs, fuel tanks and rockets off the corsair? sure they did but they still flew. I have personally flown a 34 lb tf gs f4u and it flew well!

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
GENTLEMEN !!!!!!! I have a story to tell about the stability of this topflite corsair.... HERE GOES I took the plane out this morning for the second and third flight...ok takeoff was good climb out was excellent and about half way through the flight I lost my ailerons they quit working my only thought was now what, my spotter yelled get on the rudder. it was flying on its own at this point with only elevator, I switched into high rudder differental and began to control the plane with rudder and elevator and throttle, would you believe I got it under control turned down wind and onto final ,,was too busy with my fingers to put the flaps down and landed the 30+ warbird with just rudder and elevator it landed and flared on the mains and I taxied back to the pits...all the spectators who were watching couldn't believe that that flight was completed with out ailerons...this bird is so stable I can't believe it...I found the aileron disconnected from the reciever...apparently during the flight the wire got caught in the throttle servo linkage and was pulled apart.....I went on to complete a third flight without incident.and that flight was just like the first one magnificent.stable takeoff stable manuvers and a stable landing this time with flaps If you thought this plane is difficult to fly and you are afraid of the first flight I say go for it....there are many things that can go wrong and cause a mishap such as pilot skill, mechanical and electrical failures...but as far as the plane being a bear in the air it is not !!!!!!!!!!.RCPILOT78

Tim,
You never told me where I can buy the 3 1/4" aluminum spoked wheels for $120.00. Would you please let me know.
Thanks,
Barry

Congrats on the save RCpilot!! You owe your spotter a cocktail.
With your experience I bet your kicking yourself for the throttle servo - aileron wire thing huh. I am always paranoid about my servo wires that have to be connected at the field and need slack to get the plane assembled. I don't think I would have kept my composure if that had happened to me. Of course I don't have your spotter either [8D]
oh thanks for the confidence boost also!
I am finishing up the fuse sheeting tonight. I am down to the rear belly part. I wish I had done it out of 2 pieces insteads of 4 as the plans say. The belly has a nasty shape. Too nasty to try to seam on. My wing seats look awesome.
Bring on the fiberglass....well not ready for that yet.

Hey Tim,
Since you have everything in your plane including the kitchen sink and hot & cold running water....
I thought of something I am not sure you have and would be relatively easy to do.
I am not going to do it but you might.....a carrier hook...retractable!
what do ya think?
c'mon man....it would mean more servos! <-- joke

RT..I balanced at 5-3/8 the book calls for 5-3/4..this will give you plenty of stability for the first flights...you can adjust the range after you get familiar with the plane..

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
wheels are robart and look a lot nicer than the pic my cam is very cheap. devins I have thought of a tail hook i am waiting to see the weight. After tommorow all light wires will be routed and servo wires in place. I need 2 6v 3000mah pack to retract just the wings so im probably going to do the first flight wings locked then if she flys ok put the other batts in or if she needs nose weight she will get the batts.
I have to clean my mess my wife made that clear and after seeing the pic Im ashamed shes right. she wants me to buy a nice cabinet and organise my stuff if I stay upstairs. I think thats fair! I am off all week on spring break and flew once we have wind rain and snow this week!

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I flew a Byron Corsair for several seasons that was about 31-32 pounds ready to fly and it flew just fine. The TF is the same size and will handle the weight easily. Just respect it around the stall as with all heavily loaded warbird types.

There hear watch the hit count go up.
I am in the ho hum stages of my new project so I mostly just read and learn from what I see. hopeing the weather will break and our field will be dry enough to get a maiden on my corsair after the Toledo show, still have to test the engines on all 3 birds as I pickeled them for the winter, and the weather wont let me do that its 25deg hi to day[>:]
Catch you later
Cheers Bob T

Tim & Bob,
It's 80 here today and sunny. Now for the really bad news, the wind is blowing 25 - 35 MPH and the weatherman says it's because you guys are send us an Artic Blast. Thanks a lot guys, thanks a lot! I just went by the field and there was no one brave or stupid enough to try and fly!
