Gater Don't no about wussy, but glad it over.

Randy

Great report, my flying buddy is in about the same boat, but with the outher brand a vet.

After 2 Corsairs I went to the dark side and am curently doing a T/F G/S P-47 and doing a lot more scale mods ie: hinge lines Gear position gussied up cockpit etc, and I am having a blast in the research, and trying to ansure questions hear when ask, or when I know the ansure.

Well so much for that

Hi,

I just ordered a set of plans for a 1/4 scale Corsair from Don Smith Plans today. I saw another thread about building it but that thread is gone now but it gave me the Idea. I hope it will be OK to ask you guy's some advise on mod's and so forth. I will start my build thread when I get the plans and after the kit is cut and I have it. It is bigger than the Top Flite Giant Corsair but there shouldn't be that much of a difference. I'll have to wait to get the plans to see how it's built. Can I get an instruction book for the TF Giant Corsair somewhere so I can see how it's built. Also are there any sites that can help me build this kit? Has anyone on here built a Don Smith Warbird?

Thanks George,

I'll print them out and take a real close look at what you Guy's are building. It seems like a nice kit. Is it pretty true to scale or is it stand off? Anyway it looks great. I'd build one but I have always wanted a real big Corsair and that other Guy I don't remember his name but he gave me the idea with his build thread thats gone.

cimara,

Why aren't any posts on his build thread? How did you find his thread? Did he decide not to build it? It would be nice to have someone else to follow along with and maybe share notes.

I dont know why he has stoped using his thread its only been a few days might be on vacation .I had his thread bookmarked on my web brouser and the answer to your last question is i doubt it he always wanted that monster corsair cant see him giving it up.He may have changed his code name like Luke has on several occasions keep looking he will probably start another one if he changed his name .Also you can check out his thread on rc scale builder like Bob mentioned
If i remember correctly i saw you were building a 1/8 scale TF corsair on new to rcu but not a newbie sounds like you were close to were he is on his 1/8 scale check out his other thread on it http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_52...16/key_/tm.htm got some cool tips there and this one http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_96...36/key_/tm.htm lots of cool tips here as well

Hi,

I e-mailed him and when he responded he said he would consider it in time. He wouldn't tell me why he quit posting but he did say he is considering it because of all of his friends that have e-mailed him and asking to come him back. He didn't want me to say anything more than that. But whatever it was he seemed pretty upset about it. I hope he comes back. He seems alright to me.

Thanks for the great information on the gear rail mounting depth. I hope to get them installed this week - maybe even sheet the wings. I am anxious to get the fuse framed up so I can get the dimensions to Kelvin at Keleo for the scale exhaust!

Bob,

Congratulations! Looks like you did better than okay and had a nice day to do it? What paint did you use? Did you clearcoat or seal the paint job? Looks good, hope you enjoy it for a long time.

Bob,

I am very impressed. The Corsair looks great and so does your flying. I wish I had a field like that without driving 35 minutes. The one I'm going to take the 1/4 scale to is south of Rockford Illinois. It has a paved runway in the shape of a big circle so where ever the wind is coming from you can still take off into it. That is a nice set up. I just haven't ever flown off pavement. I have heard things can get a little wild. Ground loops and such! Anyway Congratulations on the build and the maiden. Well Done.

Thanks David

I was not sure on the glassing, so it is covered with ultra coat, but will never do that again, and depending on how my 47 comes out I just strip it and glass it and paint etc. Will have to get a few flights first.

Sliding Canopy,

I found this while looking for scale looking hidden mechanisms to make the canopy move without a servo. If I build the 1/4 scale I'm going to give it a try. I just thought some of you might try it on your TF Giant Corsair that haven't gotten that far yet.

What do you think?

Good idea. A man after my own heart. Scrap CD drives and old VHS mechanisms have lots of parts, gears, etc. that can be used in models.

Hay Barry

Yea when you see it in the Pic's it look better than up close and personal, but it did come out vary nice, but it has 13 months of hanger rash all vary minor but I see it. did lots of 46 size birds learning to get the covering right.

Cimara Thanks for the ka-do's on the covering. the pic's are not as good as I had hoped for, but thats what you get when you don't bring your own camera.

John,

I'm NOT hinging mine. I got my template from ScottyC and I'm real happy with it.

John
I hinged mine .I used small piano hinges from nelson hobbies for the hinges http://www.nelsonhobby.com/piano.html .I made fiberglass hatch doors and glued the hinges on with JB quick just score up the fiberglass and the metal hinges to let the JB Quick to glue the 2 together .I also used neodidum magnets (Rare earth magnets) to hold the hatches closed .I used small screws to mount them to the hatch housings so they could be removed for service hope this helps
You dont have to hinge them you can just use the magnets to hold them on

rt3232,

What do you mean you used wood but had to back it up to hold shape? What kind of wood did you use and what did you back them up with?

cimara,

I really like your hatch method. I showed OZ on his P-47 build thread a different way to make the canopy slide and he told me I wasn't an engineer and to take my attitude somewhere else. I guess I won't be posting on his thread anymore. That guy is mean.
