WACO YMF
RE: WACO YMF
The copy of Jim’s letter is interesting. Unfortunately Jim passed away awhile ago.
Different fuselage design, different formers and main fuse frame.
UPF is a few inches longer in Overall Length
Wingspans are the same, YMF has 2° dihedral, UPF has none in the upper wings, and both have 2° in the lower. The UPF has a plywood perimeter around the wingtips approximately 8" wide. Wing Walks are on both sides of the fuselage on the UPF, port side only on the YMF.
Cabane struts are different. Most of the UPFs have a horizontal strut just above the fuselage connecting the lower ends of the front and rear cabane struts.
Different center section cutout for front cockpit access. Military specs called for a larger, square cutout on the UPFs rather than the curved section found on a few early civilian models. Y/UMFs have a smooth curve for the cutout.
Rudder and Vertical Fin have a different profile, the UPF being taller and more pointed while the YMF is wider and more round. The UPF has air balance section at the top that is square to the vertical fin, the original Y/UMFs did not have an air balance, and the new Super YMFs have an angled air balance. UPFs have a fixed metal trim tab on the rudder; YMFs have an inset, adjustable balsa trim tab.
Horizontal Stabilizer and Elevator have a different top view profile. The UPF leading edge curves back near the fuselage and the elevator is narrower. The UPF stab/elevator airfoil is much thicker (approx 3 times thicker).
Landing gear is different. UPF gear is taller and has a wider stance (101†vs 74-1/2â€). The inner struts “cross†and connect to the fuselage near the main gear attachment point and connect to the main gear below the axels. The Y/UMF gear inner struts do not cross and connect to the fuselage at the bottom of the fuse and to the main gear at the bottom of the outer main strut (about 8-9†higher than the UPF). The newer YMFs have gear that is about 3†shorter than the original. The fairings are different.
Cowls – The majority of Y/UMFs have Bump Cowls (some have been re-fitted with Smooth cowls). The UPFs can have all three styles, Bump, Ring and Smooth.
Waco Joe can tell you more about the UPF as he actually owns and fly’s a full size one, NC 39748 (See the picture of Joe taxing back to the hanger during the 2007 American Waco Club Fly In at Creve Coeur Airport)

Hi Lazy Ace...I am running a G26 in my 1/5 scale bird.I started out with a 18x6-10 Zinger ,she flew ok but the revs were a little low ,only about 2600.I an now using a 17x8 Xoar and wow what a difference!!!Revs are in the middle sevens, lots of power .I can fly comfortable at just a little more than half throttle.

RE: WACO YMF
I'm always ready to talk about the UPF, and Wacos in general. Let me know if you have any questions about the full-size versions.
Actually only the original UPF-7 and YPT-14 prototypes had cowlings from the factory. All full, smooth cowls. All the production UPF-7s had no cowl of any style and no wheel pants. They were built for the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP, often shortened to CPT) and were painted in a style similar to the Army trainers (blue fuselage and yellow wings). But the UPFs were all civilian airplanes rather than military.
The original UPF-7 prototype and the YPT-14s sent to the military for evaluation had the narrow gear like the YMF-5s have. The Wider gear was suggested by the military, as was the larger center section cutout. But the Stearman ended up getting the military contract so the UPFs were built for the CPTP market. My airplane was at Texas A&M during its CPTP days.
Let me know if you need any more info.
Cheers!

Hello all
Kind of quiet for a few days so I’ll jump in and say you guys building the 33% and larger Waco’s are doing beautiful work. What a show it would be if all of you could make it to Top Gun next year.

RE: WACO YMF
Thx Dan
I worked from Thursday morning 08h00 straight through to Friday morning 06h00 to finish the Waco(mostly detail work). I finished all the fuel fittings and lines, the tubing was more difficult to do than i thought it would be but came out looking awesome in the end. All that's left now is leather "grommets" where cabane struts meets fuse and CG. The trailer will be delivered on Sunday afternoon or Monday morning so weather permitting the maiden will happen either on Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest. I need to do a couple flights before next weekend as whe have a fly-in and alot of people are expecting to see this monster fly
I will keep updating the progress to the "BIG MOMENT" but for now its off to club duvet as i've been awake for 40hrs straight.

That looks really nice Arno,
I have been wanting to get to my fuel lines but just haven't found the time. I will have to see if I can find the fittings in the proper size for 33%. I will be watching for updates and the flight report.

RE: WACO YMF
Arno you are doing an outstanding job. That is one beautiful WACO. You have done yourself proud. Anthony I have been looking for fittings for the fuel lines and haven't found what I wanted yet. I ordered some 1/8 in fuel fittings from Aircraft spruce. They are very close but the holes are a little big for 1/8 in tubing. So I think I will use them for molds and resin cast them and then final size them for what I need. If you find any please let me know before I go to all the trouble.
RE: WACO YMF
Lonnnie it looks like you are finding the same thing I am. The fitting would be just fine for 40% but are just a little too big for 33%. I have done quite a bit of searching and cannot find anything smaller than 1/8"NPT. I brought home some brass fittings from work to check the size and they are just too large. Your best option may be to cast them.

No Luck!!
I googled my butt off trying to find the fittings. There are plenty with 1/8" NPT-03. We need 1/16"-02 The 03 is 3/16" line and the 02 is for 1/8" line. If someone knows of a source please post it.

Made it to the field with my raggedy ole pica waco today. About 3 mph breeze, heat index around 100, but I toughed it out for a couple of good flights, easy to do when only two people show up. Looking at all your beutiful waco's makes me wish we had a building season here so I had time ro recover mine and do a little cosmetic repairs. Is anyone going to monster plane in Lakeland this fall. Be sure to sport your brotherhood tee's. May all your landings be greased and on schedule.

I just googled 1/16" NPT fittings, and came up with quite a few of them. Some are anodized (the ones for Nitrous Oxide injection) That's where I should have remembered them from. Anyway, there are a lot of them there.

When is the monster flyin? We come down in October to Fort Myers for the winter, the earlier the better as far as I'm concerned. I told my wife I'd like to get there for the Cape Coral R-Sea Hawks jet flyin October 16-17.

I googled the same but still no luck, I find fittings in 1/16" but not the correct Tee's. They need to be 1/16" NPT AN2. This will be for 1/8" OD tubing. I find alot of AN3 which is for 3/16" tubing. Edelbrock has only 1/8" AN3 for their Nitrous injection. At 18$ a fitting I will most likely wait a while to add the fuel lines even if I find them. Plane fly's great without them

Hey Anthony
Check out this link http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/ha/ Look at the AN fittings. They are there is you don't mind spending a lot of money. These are what I'm going to use for molds for resin casting

RE: WACO YMF
Thanks Lonnie,
Not a bad price on them there compared to what I found on other sites and they do have them in the AN-2 sizes. I will order some but it will be after Bomber Field. Saving my $$$ for the trip.
