RE: XYZ 53-STS Twin
Hay Guys.
A bit of an up date on the xyz.. Turns out the spark plugs were crappy.. Tried re gapping them to 20thou and running low needle a touch richer and wham, started and firing on both.. Still didn't trust them and have replaced with genuine NGK plugs
Have put roughly 3 ltrs threw it so far. I have a thick black liquid soot coming threw the engine and down my fuse atm, and I'm hoping this is due to running rich and the fuel raito of 30:1. I will be going to a 40:1 once this batch of 5 ltrs is threw it.
So I'm swinging a 22x12 prop and it pulls no probs. Tried a 23x10 but it really struggled top end.. Idled really well but it just didn't unwind in the air like it does with the 22x12. Mind you it was a 23x10 wood prop, may be different with a CF prop..
Exhausts are crap. Leak like a sive, but i have contacted the supplier and they say new ones are being made as we speak. Should be getting them soon. If not I'll just get a couple of cans..
Also if your looking for a twin sounding motor, this aint for you. You can hear the twin sound on the ground but once in the air it sounds like a single but quieter.. The both fire at TDC.
Anyway, all good.
Cheers

RE: XYZ 53-STS Twin
It would be very tight in a 9"cowl. It measures just under 9"accross the spark plug caps approximately 1 1/2" above the prop shaft. (widest point is not level with the prop shaft).
Not sure where they sell them in USA. KMP sell a similar sized twin with rear induction.
Got my XYZ from HobbyKing.

One problem some people have had is the engine miss-firing intermittently.
The spark plug caps are very loose and the shielding is the earth for the CDI circuit (they may not always be in contact), if you fit earth leads from the spark plug caps to the engine it may run smoother(mine does).
(This fix was given to me by another XYZ53 engine user)

I have been using the XYZ 53 for years and it has had many hours of use. It has proven very reliable and powerful.
At a recent fly-in I met a visiting flyer with one of these engine in a BlackHorse Zero. He has found that the engine crankshaft is vulnerable to damage from prop strikes and has had to replace the crankshaft a few times. the engine airframe combination seems to work well otherwise. He flew it well, lots of power

Hey All, I recently bought a warbird with one of these engines. Engine is just fine but was curious about the mounting pattern? Is it similar to any other engines, just incase i want to replace it later on down the road, maybe something else would drop right in

I have had my XYZ53 for many years now and it is still a good reliable engine. I doubt the engine mount pattern would be identical to any other engine of similar size or power.
Although my engine has been reliable and has survived one serious crash, years ago, I met another flyer with one in a wardbird (Zero) and it tended to nose over occasionally and he had had to replace the crankshaft 3 times.
