I never knew that Quadra made a 45 ( I don't think they did ) but they did make a Q42 and I have one with a spring starter. I would not consider removing the starter, mine broke one time and I tried dozens of times while I waited for a new spring and never could get it to start. I put on the new spring and it went the first time I tried. If you want a lighter engine buy one of the new electronic ignition ones, I did and my Q42 has been sitting on a shelf for 10 years. Good luck.

either keep it or go get a sullivan megatron starter because quadra's are very hard if not impossible to flip start

(cue the one person who's quadra starts on the second flip every time)

It is indeed a 42, sorry for the typo. This is my first BIG engine and ive run it twice in glow version on my testbench.
Ive changed the ignition to a CH unit, so i can run it on gas. I have made a (brison style) mechanical advance/retard ignition setup coupled
with my throttle arm. When starting it sets the timing to one or twoo degree's late from TDC. Full throttle makes 30 degree's early TDC.

The spring starter holds fine, testflipped it a zillion times. I guess i leave it on for now, see if it holds/is needed.

I know its not a powerhouse, but for starting in big gassers it should do fine. I 'll put it on a 1:3 Mr. Mulligan currently under restoration as well.

Regards,

Frank

If the C&H ignition is working correctly, you will not the spring start. Just flip it thru and she will fire right up.
Here is a link to help make sure you have the ingnition set-up just right:

Frank:
you may find it will work better with about 5 degrees advance at idle.

I broke the spring on my Quadra 42 at the field, first start of the day. I could not flip start it but I was able to use a heavy cord and start it kinda like we used to start lawn motors back in the day (age showing here) when I got home from the field I ordered 2 springs form B&B so I always have a spare.

Frank,

With the CH ignition, you SHOULD NOT use a spring starter (may be true for other makes, but I don't know). The CH ignition system will fire, full spark EVERY time the magnet passes the pick up switch. That may not be what you want when you are winding up the spring. If you try to by-pass this characteristic by turning on the system only after winding up the spring, you should know that the CH igition system fires every time it is turned on as well. Not good.

The Quadra 42 with a CH ignition should start fine by hand flipping.

Have fun!

Thanks guy's,

Usefull feedback. I tested the quadra today, and indeed the best starting timing is about 4 to 6 degrees.
No kick back, two primes with ignition off and one flick does the job. The mechannical advance did work but needs
some refining.

I've done some primes with the ignition on, and this engine really does some hefty kicking ! (two hands holding the prop!)

FRank
