Gas Engine?
Hey guys lots of reading holy cow! I am just getting into gas engines and have gotten a 74" extra 300 they call for a 120 to 150 4 stroke. I was considering putting in a gas engine but not sure if this is even an option for me . There are a couple of engines that interest me the ZDZ40 or the First place 2.4 .. But this plane says tht it is to be 10 lbs or so. Is that to much engine for the planes airframe...
THanks alot..

RE: Gas Engine?
A 140 glow engine is 1.4 cu inches. glow engines are typically measured in cubic inches whilst gas engines are typically measured in cubic centimeters. The conversion factor is about 16, so 1.4 cubic inches equals 22 cubic centimeters. So you need a gas engine in the range of 22 cc's. Perhaps a little bigger since gas engines do not produce as much power as glow (for the same displacement). There are engines in the 22 - 35 cc range. Overall your plane will be a little heavier with gas because they are a little heavier. Gas engines have to have a way to make a spark and this adds weight. a glow engine can use a simple glow plug - very light.

RE: Gas Engine?
At the very minimum a G26 will be needed for this plane. A better bet would be a 35 to 40cc (2.1 to 2.4 ci) gas engine. My Sig Extra weighs 12lbs dry with a ST 2500 on it. The ST 2500 is coming off and a Brison 2.4 is going on. All up weight shouls still be under 13lbs. The 2.4 (FPE, Brison, Fox, etc) would be the best bet.

Minty
I would suggest a Brillelli 25gt w/ei that weighs only 2lbs 12oz and spins an APC prop 18x8 at 8000RPM generating 14lbs 4oz thrust. I have this engine installed in a Giles-202 that is rated for the same size engine as your extra 300. My Giles showed a weight as 10.5 lbs with a 120 size glow. My total weight came out to be 11lbs 15oz with this gas engine. My wing loading will be 28.5 oz comparied to 26oz with the 120 Glow. Here are a fer pics of this plane with this nice gas engine. I have not flyown her yet, but I know she will fly very well. Cost is only $265.00
goto www.brillelli.com for a look see.
Another possiblity is the BCMA-SPE 26 that weighs only 2lbs 4oz complete with muffler and EI. www.bcma.com Click on the BCMA-SPE engine This engine is only $250.00
