Zenoah problem
Hi guys,
I was flying my GP 1/3 Pitts today, enjoying the great northeast weather we have had this weekend. The plane has a Zenoah G45 with a BB spring starter. It has about 5 gallons thru it. During the first (and only) flight, the engine starting making a rattling or loud clicking noise. There was no change in power but I landed anyhow. As I taxied closer the engine was rattling up a storm. I suspected the spring started had fragged so I removed the cowl and engine only to find that the spring started was if perfect condition. I removed the starter anyway and reinstalled the engine. Upon restarting it, I found that it was still making the rattling sound. Also, I notice that when I move the prop back and forth, the engine makes a clicking sound. Unfortunately, I cannot remember if the engine did that before or not.
BTW, I am running Amsoil 100:1 mixed at 80:1.
Any ideas on this? Could it be a bearing? Or should I send the engine back to Horizon for service?
Thanks for any help,
Jim

RE: Zenoah problem
Hopefully it is still under warranty, so the best thing to do is to ship it back to Horizon for repair. Remember it helps to include a note saying exactly what the problem is.

RE: Zenoah problem
Well, since it says "Zenoah" in the heading, it may be OK for me to reply...
Take the 2 bolts out of the prop hub, tighten the nut holding the mag rotor on...
OK with you, Sinergy ?

RE: Zenoah problem
Since the hub is tight the rattle must be a bearing...Unusual, but possible...
If it was ever in a crash the crank halves sometimes get pushed together on the big end roller retainer..Further running in that condition turns the bottom of the rod blue from friction and trashes the crank.....
