Default Wild Hare EXTRA 300 28% and MT57 CN

I recently started putting together a WildHare Extra 300. I also purchased a MT-57 CN, which I am installing in it. I originally posted some of these pictures in another thread that was for a Lanier Extra 330, but I realized that it did not belong there. So instead I decided to start another thread and post the build of the plane and the installation of the engine.

Once I am done with putting together the plane I will include videos of the engine running on the ground (measuring thrust) and while in flight.

If anyone else has a Wildhare Extra 300 or an MT-57 and you would like to share your experience please feel free to do so.

Wow, the inside of that cylinder looks nice. Keep us posted, I always like to hear about new engines.

'wow, that engine looks nice. We won't have to buy a side carb chainsaw conversion anymore to get more power on a heavy 50cc plane. Where can we buy that engine?

I have, he got it from me.

On my test stand with stock muffler that engine turns a 22-10 bunny prop about 6800 rpm. The bunny/xoar prop is a substantial load so this is a darned good number. And it started easily, no problems with it at all.

This testing was done on an engine that had about 1 minute run time on it with 32-1 pennzoil mix gas. It can only get better from here.

WOW, so were probably talking 7 grand or better when broke in, leaned out and off the breakin mixture. Yikes! I was just looking at engine weights on AeroBobs site, it's looks like the MT-57 is nealry 1/4 pound liter and 200 bucks cheaper than the B engine. When I added everything up. Engine design+power+quality+Ralph Cunningham service+price I just could not resist. I hate to say this cause I love DL and DA engines, but I can't imagine buying them again. As for the 60cc size, it's going to be a no brainer if this engine does what it's supposed too.

Love the competition!

Sorry for taking so long getting back to you but I have been very busy lately. Finally I got everything together and the plane seems to be ready to fly.
Today I run the MT-57 for the first time. I used a Bunny prop (Xoar type) 22X8 for the first run. The engine took a few flips for the diaphragm to get wet to the point where it would bring the fuel to the carburetor. I had to open the diaphragm back plate and prime it as it was dry.

After that the engine fired right up. A couple of choke flips with the throttle open until it popped and then opened the choke, ¼ throttle and the engine fired right up.

I was actually impressed how nice it idled. The needle settings where not flyable, but close enough to get the engine running (the settings were on the extreme rich side).

There are some videos that I posted on Youtube follow the links to see the engine running.

[link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdD7JCr_OGQ[/link]

I was not really impressed with the performance with the 22X8 prop as it gave about 6800 RPM and about 25 lb of pull ( you can see the video).

[link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0YsCXHS_XI[/link]

The idle of the engine especially after running it for only 10 minutes is incredible. The engine can hold reliably 1400 RPM and if pushed it can reach 1200 rpm. I can assume that it can get better once the engine brakes in.

[link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XHRbWBPkzI[/link]

I was getting some type of popping sound on the high end RPM and any kind of carburetor adjustment did not seem to get rid of it. It turns out that it was a timing issue as it was set low. After advancing the timing approximately 3 degrees the high end RPM smoothed out.
The transition is very smooth and low and high RPM is constant.

Later on I decided to change the prop to a 23X8 (Bunny-Xoar type) and that is when the engine came to life. The static thrust increased from 25 to 27 lbs and the engine seemed happier. Unfortunately I do not have a video of this as the batteries of the camera died.

I will later on post performance numbers with this prop as well as a video. At one point, while holding the plane (weight is 16 lbs), I pointed it towards the sky at full throttle and it literally wanted to take off like a rocket.

I m planning to fly the plane with this engine this coming weekend.

If there is someone else out there that has any input please share it with us.

Is there a Europe/UK dealer for these engines? At least lsproengines pages mention test site to be in UK. Machining looks nicer than in DL50.

I flew my engine today in a 22 pound Lanier Yak 54 that I got because a DA wouldn't make it pull out of a hover. This thing goes out of a hover like a rocket at 22 pound, in a 16 pound plane it will be ballistic! You're going to love this engine![sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]

Engine delay,
Engines did not make it to airport on time so they now are in customs and will not be released until Monday.
Sorry guys!!!!! this makes me feel bad also. There is some kind of Chinese holiday. This sucks, but this is something out of my control. The wextra wait will be worth it when you get the engine. As you read soarich flew his today and the performance was outstanding. He flew it in a 22lb. plane that we all know it is to heavy but even at that it performed great. When things go wrong that go by the dozens. I brought my camera to take Videos and some where the battery come out of the camera and got lost. Seems like I cant catch a break. Next time out we will take videos.

Hey this question is for Larry, Ralph or Tom. I turned the prop of the engine back and forth and I noticed a clicking sound. You can hear it on the video below.

[link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M70nt4R5SpQ[/link]

I then opened the engine to see what was causing it. It looks like it is the piston and the piston rod. It seems that there is no up and down or side to side motion, but if I twist the piston it has a lot of motion.

[link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qIREee-JUA[/link]

I have quite a few gassers and 4 of them are from Tomy RC and none seem to make this clicking sound.
Is this normal? How are the other MT-57 doing? Are they making the same clicking noise?

Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks

No this is not normal. Unless I was mis informed Wild Hare was sent [2] engines. One was for running and testing one was for MOCK UP AND PICTURES ONLY. The engine you have might be the mock up engine. I will double check with Tomy R/C Engines. to be sure. The engine you have could be the one not to be sold because the crank tolerance was not correct, and that could be the noise. If that is not the case I am sure Tomy will have you send it to Ralph or have it replaced by me.

I just got off the phone with China and what I have said above has been verified by Tomy Shen, that engine should not have been used for anthing except MOCK UP. Do not fly the engine anymore before talking to Tom Fausett.

Tom Fausett is out to the Toledo air show. He will be back on Monday. I send him an email, as he should have access to it. I explained to him what was said in this thread. I also send the same email to Shen Ping (Tomy Rc) just so that he can have the heads up on this. I might try calling Tomy later on tonight to see what he thinks on this.

This is disappointing. I though I was going to be able to fly the plane this weekend.
Oh well, that’s life,

Eric

Tomy RC answered my email and repeated to me what you said about the static display model of the MT-57. I am trying to figure out a way to take care of this. Either way, no flying for me this weekend.

That could be the reason that I did not get the expected performance numbers from the engine (in compare of what you got).

That could very well be the reason.

Are there serial numbers on these engines.
I was wondering how they would know that engine was a mock up ?

Tomy RC said to me this morning that some of his earlier runs on the MT-57 the tolerances of the crankshaft and the piston where not correct. He has since fixed the problem. In this case he might give an engine or two to vendors for static display purposes only.

As far as a serial number on the one that I have it does not have one. I believe it would be an excellent idea to do that. That way each engine will be able to be traced to the vendor of origin.

I’ll talk to Tomy about that to see what his thoughts are on this.

Or at least stamp them not for resale or something so they don't get out to the public that could be a death card to the reputation of an otherwise good product
If indeed the mt57 holds up to the test of time.

I must be brief I am on an iPhone

Tony never told me the two engines were not the same
they look and run identical and I paid full price for both of them.
if pianori wants the other one all he has to do is ask.

I sold him that engine as a favor and at a large discount.

Still I am happy to swap it out, but I do not believe there is any difference.
