Zenoah G23 Capabilities
I'm putting a G23 on a Bridi killer bee. The plane has an 80 inch wingspan, and should weigh just under 13 lbs all up. Will a G23 fly this thing? What prop should I use? I'm thinking 15 X 8 or 16 X 6. Just curious, as I've never even started this engine...
Thanks
Thanks

RE: Zenoah G23 Capabilities
That's interesting. In another thread I read where the G23 could deliver 14 lbs of thrust with a 15 X 8 prop spinning at around 9500 to 10 grand.
I'll have to get my fish scales out and figure out the thrust on this thing.
Thanks for the info.

I have a G23 on a 12lbs. RV-4, it flies right above scale w/ a 16x6. It looks like you are on the bottom edge of the power threshold for the killer bee.

I'm using a G26 with an APC 18x6w in a 27% Giles 202 at 72" span, 1100 sq in wing area, and 13.5 lbs dry. It flies great! I'm not into 3D and it doesn't do unlimited vertical but it goes straight up a fair way before running out of puff. I don't know what the difference is, power wise, between a G23 and a G26.

RE: Zenoah G23 Capabilities
Thanks Fokker,
I've read somewhere that the difference is about 3 to 400 RPM's for any given prop, but I may be mistaken.
The G23 was given to me, so I really want to make this engine work. I'm fairly certain it will fly it, and hopefully power it through a loop. Unlimited vertical I know it won't have. I just wanted to hear from some G23 owners about their experiences. I just don't want to run out of runway on the maiden, if you know what I mean....

If you keep it around 13 lbs. you will be fine. You won't run out of runway.
Keep in mine that people are flying the 15-17 Hanger 9, P-47 with a G26. The G23 only .15 C.I.s less that a G26.

RE: Zenoah G23 Capabilities
New style, the magneto and coil are separate. The magneto is in the back with a small flywheel. From the front it looks EI, until you get around to the back where you can see the mag and flywheel. I like the engine, but it sure is heavy for it's size. I thought about converting it to EI, but I'm going to wait and see if I need noseweight. If it balances OK, then there is no need in wasting 150 bucks on converting it. However, if it is very nose heavy, then I may have to.
I'm thinking about putting a bigger carb on there. Maybe even the Walbro WT813 with accelerator pump. Does anyone know anything about that combination? Will I gain anything from the 50 bucks? The stock carb has a small bore, so I think just getting a bigger carb might open up the power band a little????

Before you go spending the bucks for ANYTHING, fly the sucker and see if it does what you want it to. If not then think about hop ups. The G-23 glow engine used a WT-499 carb. I think thats bigger than what you have now.

2Slow, If you keep the weight around 13 lbs. the plane will fly just fine, no 3D but good solid loops, rolls, etc. In my group there are many Zenoah G23/26's flying planes that range from 11 to 16 lbs. The only thing we change on the engine is use a very free flowing muffler. These engines respond well to a good muffler. All of the planes pictured have an 80+ wingspan.

Antique,
Thanks for the post and pics, I love those water shots! It shouldn't be a problem to keep it under 13 lbs.
I will definitely have to change the muffler eventually. Maybe to a bisson. Right now it has the stock muffler. I take it that muffler is too restrictive?

RE: Zenoah G23 Capabilities
As suggested to me, I think I'm going to go with Bennett's free flowing exhaust header on mine. Seems to be very unrestrictive...

I now use an Abell after switching from a Bennetts, but just wondered if there was anything better available. Though a bit on the loud side the Abell works great.
