Hey Tom

The RCXL ignition systems will work with a 800mah pack (4.8V). Lots of guys give themselves a safety factor and use 1200+ packs.
I am using the 1100mah A123 batteries with no problems at all.

Cheers
Henry

Henry,

Thanks for the heads up on the batteries. I've been trying to lighten the load a little and an 1100mah A123 will help.

A couple more questions on the RCGF 50cc... It has a spring loaded choke that locks closed with the throttle then springs open as you open the throttle. This is different than other gas engines I have which have a regular choke lever and a detent for open and closed.

How does the spring loaded choke work out in the real world? Any tips or tricks on making a wire or something to actuate it?

I'm mounting the engine one a GP 27% Extra-330. Got it bolted on the firewall this evening. It clears the firewall OK but not by much. I'm torn between leaving it as-is or making a hole in the firewal and building a plywood box behind it to keep fuel out of the fuselage. Any thoughts? Think the hole is necessary? I guess my concern is about airflow to the carb. It looks to be OK but not sure if I should just do something to be absolutely sure.

You need 1/2" of free space between the firewall and the carb. Less than that should have the firewall opened up to permit flow to the carb.

As for the choke,k as long as it always opens with the throttle opening there won't be a problem. You'll just have to use the idle trim to set the starting throttle position, which is what most have been doing for years.l A simply rod connecting to the choke level works just fine for actuation. Just extend it out to someplace you can get ahold of it.

It has about 3/8" of space so I think I'll take a hole saw and open it up then build some sort of ply box behind it. I should probably actually measure the space first I guess to make sure that it really isn't 1/2" or more.

I think I have a decent idea figured out for the choke linkage.

Hey All

Aussiesteve and I had done a LOT of work and research on the muffler side of things. We have the factories ready to produce and in fact we have been bringing over the 26cc pitts mufflers for a couple of months...................

Cheers
Henry

Piston,

Do you plan to keep offering the imported Pitts muffler for the 26, or will you discontinue this in favor of the Jtec unit, or perhaps offer both? The Jtec offering is noticeably more expensive than the import, so if the import is as good it makes sense to get that one.

Regards,

Randy L.

If you are asking how long it takes to receive an engine from Henry, I had mine in a few days.

The weather is starting to turn for the better. I was able to take the plane out and start the rcgf 62 engine with 22x10 prop. Ran the engine at 2500 rpm's for 10 min, let the engine cool and then repeated it. After 20 mins I ran to full throtle with a fish scale. It only showed 21 lbs. Not sure if I need to make some adjustments or just go fly. The engine sounded very good. Slight hesitation on run up, but othere than that, it started very easy. Ideas???? or just go fly???

The engine is a little rich on low end if it boggs when you throttle up. I had to spend a little time before I finally got both needles set.

Hey Mick

The Aerovate 20cc is producing a LOT of rpm.
The big thing is that the engine can produce the rpm.... BUT the electronic ignition needs to be able to produce the spark!

The rcxl ignition system is rated to about 8000 rpm +. I do know that guys have taken the rpm levels much higher, but this is the recommended level from the manufacturer.

The beauty of this is that you can go to a higher dia prop OR to a higher pitch prop depending on your aircraft and your performance requirements.

For me, I want to bring down the rpm to about the 8000-8500 rpm level or so. To get here I will be able to fool around with prop combination's that will give me what I need from the plane.

I am picking up a Great Planes Toni racer later on this week... and installing the 20cc into it. This will be fun...

Cheers
Henry

Either a 15x8 or 16x6 would seem to be a good choice. I had a similar concern some time ago regarding max rpm on the ignition and was advised that it's good for well beyond the rpm limits of our aero engines. Terry at CH Ignition has one on a piped G20 that turns in the 10,000 rpm region.

Major Splat:

I've got a RCFG 20cc installed in a scale P-36 with a 15-7 three blade prop. Not completely broken in yet. Max rpm is 8,180. Richened up high end just a little. Max rpm now about 8,000. This engine has plenty of power.
This is with 30 to one mix. If they come out with the rear carb version and pitts style or similar muffler avialable, I'll replace an OS 120 FS I have in a P-40 with the gasser.

They have a rear carb and a pitts style muffler is available. I'm looking to put one in a Corsair in about a week.

I just bought the RCGF 45 because a couple of people recomended it for my giant super sportster. I didn't see and prop sizes in the instructions pdf file I looked at on the web site, But did see 20x 10 on the spec sheet. What are most of you running for break-in props, and after break-in and also oil and mix ratio. I know that info is in this thread somewhere but it's pretty long. Thanks, Britt.

was also gonna look into getting a Jtec muffler for the 45, heard there was a big delay in shipping due to availability?

Same prop for break in you'll fly with. Any good mineral oil at 32-1 works for break in with any engine. If you elect to use more oil, say 25 or 30-1 it doesn't hurt anything. Synthetics work well for break in at 32-1 biut it takes a little longer. Not a bad idea in the long run.

I ordered one of the mufflers and they told me there was only a 1 week back-up. I purchased the wrap around pitts style with a smaller canister to fit between the head and the firewall.
