G23 carburetor question

G23 carburetor question
First of all I am pretty new to gas engines.
Here is my issue: Gas will not flow into the carburetor. Fuel will flow out of the tank when the line is not attached to the carburetor.
If you try to blow air through the carb via the fuel line it is impossible. If you take the carb apart and push on the valve controlled via the diaphragm then you can blow air through the fuel intake.
I ordered and installed a carb rebuild kit. But I get the same issue.
The engine will start if you put some gas in the carb intake. But it just runs on that gas and quits.
This engine was ran 20 times in 2007 but not at all in 2008. It did start hard.
What do I need to look for as the motor still will not take fuel.
Thank you.
Todd

RE: G23 carburetor question
Since the engine will only run when the carb is primed it means that the carb is not pumping gas, and since you have rebuilt the carb that should rule out the possibility of a defective diaphram. However maybe the pulse hole is blocked or it's possible that you have the carb turned 180 deg wrong. To check look at the butterfly shaft and the screws that hold the butterfly in place the heads should be showing, if the ends of the screws are showing then the carb needs to be turned end for end.

RE: G23 carburetor question
I'm with Karol....if the diaphragms are pliable, internal screen is clear....a pulse port blockage would be a great place to look. Are you trying to start it by hand or with a starter?

RE: G23 carburetor question
I took the carb apart again and everything looks ok to me. But I am inexperience with gas engines.
I will try to start the engine again today. I am attempting to start it with an electric starter.
Can either of you explain where the a pulse port hole is in the carb. And what is its function.
Thanks to both for the replies.

RE: G23 carburetor question
The pulse port will be visible on the engine side of the carb, through the carb spacer block, gaskets, and then in the intake port shoulder on the cylinder. All need to be lined up, without the gaskets partially covering the port...etc, in order for it to get the appropriate pulse from the crankcase to pump gas.

RE: G23 carburetor question
I checked the pulse port and all looks in order.
So I tried to start the motor again.
This time it looked like the pump was pulling fuel out of the tank. At least the gas is sucked out to the carb. You can see that by flipping the prop. So I thought it would start.
But it will still not run except when fuel is put into the carb. It runs and then stops.
Any more ideas?
Your help is appreciated.

RE: G23 carburetor question
I have no experience with a G23 but do check the lowspeed needle may be its screwed too far in, open it 1/4 turn at a time and try again.

RE: G23 carburetor question
I have finally got my G23 starting and running correctly.
After installing the carb over haul kit and learning how to prime the motor, starting it is easy.
I think that when trying to start these motors it is important not to flood them.
The high and low carb adjustments have been set so that the motor idles at a slow speed. And the motor will smoothly transition from low to high and high to low throttle.
Now I need to go fly the plane.
I have learned a lot from getting this motor to run.
Thanks to all who helped.
