RE: NEW DLE30!
clouddancer,
I'm just using the stock muffler on my QQ Yak. But only because I didn't have the money for a good pitts style muffler. The stock muffler is a bit loud at full throttle. But after my engine is broken in, it will seldom ever see full throttle. Most of my flying is low, and slow.
The only pitts muffler I've seen for the DLE-30 that wasn't Chinese is the J-Tec.

RE: NEW DLE30!
thanks..I probably need to look at really how much of the cowl I would have to cut away.there is a silencer for the dle 30 fits in the stock muffler stack.its available at valleyview and tbm models for a very modest price.I watched the demo on you tube and supposedly drops rpms 300 to 400 but otherwise doesnt impact performance and based on sound defintely quieter.
as for J'tec over many years I have had several of their products I just dont want to shell out 80 bucks for a shiny muffler concealed under a cowl..

J-tec is a great muffler , good sound and worth the money .
I also use an 18* 12 prop . certainly works for me on a 2 metrer P51 . , tried an 18* 10 but felt that was a litle too small .

RE: NEW DLE30!
cap the j'tec is a pitts style muffler specifically for the DLE 30..I don't have any data about loss of rpm's..given the power of these engines I would expect the loss minimal and lots of power left over..I am also looking at the stock muffler using a silencer that costs a little more than 20 bucks.. we have no noise issues but neither do I want to draw any attentiuon to it either.I was just hoping there was a decent pitts style muffler available for the DLE at a more resonable price.

RE: NEW DLE30!
I got my Pitts style muffler from Valley View RC for 59 bucks...fits and works perfect with the only difference being you cannot route the spark plug lead bewteen the down tubes (which I wouldn't do anyway). I went around to the left (as you look at the plane). Sounds good and no issues with it.

RE: NEW DLE30!
cloudancer,
If money wasn't an issue (I'm unemployed right now), I'd consider getting one of the inserts for the stock muffler, too. The power loss wouldn't be a problem. As the DLE-30 has way more power than needed for my QQ 73" Yak. Nobody has said anything yet about the sound at my flying field. But I think everyone would appreciate it if it was a little quieter.
I was just looking at photos of the insert, and it really doesn't look like it would be that difficult to make one. I might play around with a bunch of tube sizes, and see what I can come up with.
Mark
P.S. - For anyone interested...I was turning 7400-7500 RPM with a Xoar 19 x 8 on the brand new DLE_30 the first time it was ever run. That was on a hot day in Romeo Michigan (somewhere around 100 degrees), very humid, and at about 800' above sea level.

Quote:-Is this J-tec a pitts style muffler? How about power loss...????
Yes it is , Tower has them .
Gives 7700 rpm on the ground using the 18*12 APC prop, really winds up in the sky .

RE: NEW DLE30!
I bought a couple of 18x10 McMaster props they seemed to work fine and the man at McMaster didn't have a problem with my drilling for the four bolt pattern.
However I was advised by some more experienced members at the field that a prop strike with a plastic prop was likely to do internal damage to a gas engine.
So I switched to wood props from VVRC (which they kindly drill at no charge) which also work fine but of course are prone to breaking in the event of a prop strike, hence a $14 landing, so I am focusing on improving my landing skills. Has anyone else heard of plastic props causing damage to gas engine crankshafts?

Hey there, was wondering if you might have seen this thread on using "lint trap" to quiet exhaust?

RE: NEW DLE30!
that sucks romeo.my son is in the same boat. to be honest the cowl is so big the stock muffler gets swallowed up and intially the silencer should be more than adequate..now after fitting the engine to the firewall this afternon I got annoyed as the standoffs that come with the DLE30 are too long.some of it couldnt be helped as the single bolt adapter added uneeded length.. the esaiest fix will be to get a set of 2 inch standoffs.that will make it a wee short but a simple washer will give me the flexibility to easy adjust the gap I want between cowl and back spinner plate.
the wierdest part is the bolts that come are so short ..I guess I just think everything should magically fall into place and I know thats dumb..but standoffs are exactly dollar store items..I had a good friend years back who was a machinst and milled barstock for me to exact specs.sadly he passed on.

Had the same problem , Made my own , bolts are too short but that is not a problem .
length of stand off's will be different for each model i guess .

That is a good question about the resistor. Maybe it helps the spark voltage to build a bit more before it acutually sparks. Or maybe it cuts the voltage down a tad???? Some genius should know ! The metal shielding may be needed for a return ground path to the ignition unit. Not sure though. Capt,n

It is not needed in a fully shielded system but it can be simply included for insurance against shield failure.

The resistor limits the frequency emitted by the spark to less than the RF value that bothers our control systems.

P.S. I got my Dle 30 still and it runs nice....it only quit once in the air...I had trimmed it back to far...my fault!

RE: NEW DLE30!
I just bought one. Its an impressive looking engine for the price.
That ignition cap is a nasty one though. I think I am going to remove those springs and secure it to the spark plug with a hose clamp. I used to do that with a RCS 140 I had years ago. It had the same CM-6 spark plug and no springs at all in the ignition cap.
I still have a RCS44B2. Its two 140's put together as a twin. A decent running engine but a little heavy

RE: NEW DLE30!
Is there an ignition module that will work with the DLE 20/30/55 and handle 7volts.
I am just an "Oldtimer" (73) trying to keep up with all the changes in our hobby/sport
Purchased 4 LiFe battts. and all the support "stuff" then discovered I would need voltage
regulators to use them with my four new DLE engines. Thanks....repinfl

RE: NEW DLE30!
Thanks Jody, sometimes it's hard to make a decision and there is soooo much info on the forums. See one question and then
there are ten of so DIFFERENT answers. I guess ya pay your money ya take your choice. Guess I'll go the regulator route.
Thanks again....repinfl

Hi, been some pecularities noted with the DLE 20 ignitions, C&H ignitions do offer a smaller, lighter ignition compatible with up to 2s lipo power supply. Contact Adrian @ [email protected] for the new C&H ignitions.

RE: NEW DLE30!
Has anyone bought the adapter from Valley View Hobbies. It converts the prop from 5 hole to 1. If so, how do you get the spindle out of the engine? Is it connected directly to the crank? Is it a left handed thread? I pulled hard on mine and couldn't get it to budge. I thought it was going to be a easy conversion. Any suggestions? Thanks, Aframe2

On the prop adapter page of our website, under product description it says Manual

RE: NEW DLE30!
No it is right hand thread. Use a deep socket and a impact to remove it if you have one. If not make something like this to hold the hub while you remove it. Unless the kit comes with a new nut my guess is you will have to cut the pilot shaft off of it and reinstall it as it is what holds the hub on.
