Target weights for 50 cc, 100 cc, 150 cc
I would like some opinions about target weights for aerobatic planes of the following engine displacements.
50 cc
100 cc
150 cc
Thanks Elson

you beat me to it
Having actually been through these weights on these engines - using non tuned exhaust and tuned pipe engines in all of the catagories - they are good size to weight envelopes
as shown - 39 lb 42% Radiocraft ZDZ160J-- 25 (with fuel) ZDZ100 Cap and 15.25 lb ZDZ50 YAK
all three terrific including the 3D stuff.
actually I clipped the Extra 8" on span - which improved it -it was sloppy on vertical snaps - now it swings right around still has 2600squares!

DMichael
50cc: 14-16lbs
100cc: 25-27lbs
150cc: 37-40lbs
50cc: 14-16lbs
100cc: 25-27lbs
150cc: 37-40lbs
I'd lower the 100cc low side to 23.5,
and lower the bottom of the 150cc class to 35 while raising the upper limit to 42, again depending on wing area.

Yeh -depending on what you like
the 50 size tho - for 17-18 lbs- that's pushing it for really smokin performance
My 5o's run 7750 on a 22x8 Mejzlic -and that's about as good as I have ever seen - over 16 lbs things get toned down

depends - with in cowl mufflers or with a pipe
lets just assume a non tuned exhaust quiet can or really good flowing in cowl (read that; the really noisy ones)
This setup pulls a 26x10 prop in low thru mid high 6000 rpm range -depending on brand of prop
up to inc 24 lbs is quite good.
Now switch to a tuned setup the power can easily turn the same prop around and over 7000
As a benchmark - very well setup factory mufflered DA100 engines -here- turn the Mejzlic 26x10 anywhere from high 6000 to 7000 The tuned can ZDZ's we have seen and played with turn this same prop in the same range -some setups considerably faster - some not.
So best weight range for the 80 can be pretty broad.
If I were to grab from the shelf a non J 80 and really good flowing , in cowl muffler - I would prop it for higher 6000 range and stuff it in a 20- to 22 lb model and expect very good results
I did one 18.5 model and some friends did others of 1550 squares -non tuned setups these were terrific setups
No secret -this engine is a favorite for me - it is my second childhood "mouse engine"
Lastly -- the new J on a full pipe - mine in early tests turned the 26x10 at 7300 -easily. The pipe is a Louisville Slugger , sizewise so not a lot of guys will be clamboring to try this setup . but power wise it is a real surprise

Dick,
With your test of the pipes on the ZDZ what would the difference be with cans? That is with performance and noise level.
Thanks,
Joe
P.S. What happen to your web site?

mixed bag - some tuned cans are not worth having
If the overall length and prop are not matched, the engine can easily have less power than open exhaust
Some very expensive cans are simply disasters unless you run thru a trial session of props and headers .
On some engines there is a flat spot you could drive a herd of cows across. The one shown under the Yellow Extra was an old Czech can - very good but no longer available
The safest bet is NON tuned muffler The JMB in fuselage muffler is the best of the bunch in my book and I have runs some very expensive highly touted German products -They wreck midrange
For the non believers - spend yer money and see for yourself.
I pulled my first site as anything with Dick or Models in the name brought up Japanese "kitty" sites. The Bas tards.
Second one-- too complex.
