    it was my buddies, yes he flew it, i wish i had my vid camera, low slow fly bys were awesome, it was a really light stirafoam head,i actually found it in my driveway, im guessing it blew from a neighbors house, i put it out and noone grabed it after a few days so i took it to the field today, that thing scared the crap out of me the other day, when i leave for work its about 4:15 in the morning, scary and dark as it is, that thing was in front of my truck looking at me when i turned my headlights on[X(]....

    Guys I might be able to pick this plane up cheap (new) off my uncle who is offloading it in the white/blue/red/yellow scheme). I'm not really into 3d but I take it these planes also perform great doing your more 'typical' aerobatics? Not aufay with the terms sorry....is IMAC what I'm looking for?

    I'm just a sport flier but dig a good blender and knife edge Might be a good way to get into my first gasser and as a smoker platform too

    Great! To be honest i'd prefer the black and yellow or red/white/blue schemes but beggers can't be choosers and there is little availability in NZ for these. Lets see how much he wants for it!

    In terms of servos Im on a budget and was looking at the hitec 5645MG (Digitals) running 6v at around 166oz torque. Is this enough? I'd go higher but then the cost skyrockets....i'd rather avoid the use of regulators etc to keep things simple KISS. Also not being into 3d a LITTLE extra weight is not a bother to me.

    I have read through some of this thread but its a mamoth!! This is a big bird too....my other alternative is the GP pitts m12s (I love bipes) but I have my CG ultimate which is nice and don't wanna part with that (I'm attached to it as I built it) or have two bipes - id just fly the big one all the time!

    Hitec now has a 5685, which is similar to the 7985. They have metal gears and 179 oz on 7.4, and they don't need a regulator. This is about the size suggested for the EF Extra, but smaller than the torque recommended for the Yak. The 5685s are only $55.

    Does anyone know if the 7955 require a regulator? They are not listed as high voltage.

    I have been running a 7955 on rudder on my Yak 54 88" with A123 @6.6v with out any trouble or regulator!
    I am sure the 7955 is rated @6v not 7.4v etc.

    In your guys currency it would be $733 is that a good price? - bearing in mind there a bit of shipping costs invovled in getting them here in the first place!

    Hmmm at 6v you are only looking at a difference of about 15oz in torque between the 5645 and 5685.....would prefer to stick with good-ol NIMH if possible.....im dreams rich - cash poor! I see the dollars sprialing already so might wait

    Would 50cc still be the recomended engine power for this bird for non-3d stuff (i.e. is 35cc to light?)

    Fireblade, I'm also going to run Life batteries, which I believe are the equivilent fot A123s. I noticed at full charge they are approximately 7.2 volts until you burn off the topped off battery. Isn't a 6 volt NMH only 6.88 at full charge?

    I have seen levels of over 7v initially when coming off charge with NiMh cells. My Yak with the A123 are also supplying the other servos (BLS 351) without any problems.

    Tha A123 certainly out perform any NiMh that I have ever used.

    I'm currently using the A123 on other models with a regulator. I used the regulator to allow for LiPo or Li Io, but I recently went to A123 and found they provide similar mah to other Lithium packs and alot more Mahs than NMH, given the same mah size pack.

    My confusion with the regulator requirement comes from the manufacturer. In the LIFE ads they say a regulator is not required, while their instructions included with the pack say otherwise.

    733 isnt too bad for new, they are 650 from the ef and then shipping on top, i dont think id buy a used airframe only for that....i ran metal hydrides in mine, 2 for reciever with a fromeco wolverine switch, they are awesome, had 2000mah 6volt packs, i started with 5645s and ended up replacing them with 5985s, the 45s had enough torque but they are slow and most important they dont center well, i could watch my ele go to different spots each time, the 85s made a world of difference, id try and get the 7985s at a minimum, im not familar with the new 5685s, id still put a 7955 on the rudder though...if your not doing precision or 3d you might get away with the 5645s as far as torque, but like i said you may notice the trim changing once in a while, they are that bad

    I installed a 5645 on the throttle and am about to start the break in and initial flights. Maybe I should change it out? I did have one 5645 that didn't seam to have good centering. I thought is was a fluke, but have since heard this was common for a while with this model.

    hmmm that does sound like a worry....more cost doh! can the 7985s still do 6v nimh?

    i forgot to mention This is a brand new packaged airframe (unbuilt). he also has a zdz 50cc twin but dont hink he wants to part with that!

    the 45 may work on throttle, centering shouldnt be an issue there, will be slower than something else, i use 5625s on throttle, same price as the 45 but much faster....
    i ran 6volt packs with my 5985s and 7985s, works great...i has a zdz60 in mine

    For myself,I like to get the best servo I can afford.( I try not to skimp there). If you can save up for a little bit longer(if your not in a hurry)and get the better servo's. I ended up using the 7955s and they do work on 7volts. I run two lipos no regulators and the servo haven't had any problems so far !! At least run a 7955 or equivalent on the rudder,it's huge !! Definitely run dual batteries don't skimp there. My friend found out the hard way this past weekend. One of the cells in his Lith-ion batteries dumped out and lost his whole plane !

    Of course this is my opinion,there is alot of others that have good ones too!! Good luck it's an AWESOME plane !!

    Price seems ok for a new plane in the box....but that's plenty. Not that great of a bargain.
    You must run a 50CC class engine in this plane. a 35CC is way too small. It is a big heavy bird. I'm thinking the engine of choice is a DLE55cc. I'm putting a new Red Lion 58CC engine in my new Edge. (basically the same size plane) It's a pretty good choice also. I run a tuned pipe on mine which jacks the cost way up but it is very quiet and adds a couple pounds thrust and power. They are nice. Also, a benefit is the exhaust outlet is way back there and there is very little exhaust residue that's left on the plane.
    I think you'll love the plane if you decide to do it. But as others have said. I wouldn't skimp on servos or engine. I used 7955 on all surfaces on mine. Never been sorry about that.

    Just an update to everyone else....
    I'm working on the Edge. I've got the engine and exhaust completely mounted and I'm enjoying the build....but I'm not very motivated. We got a storm last week that dumped 6" of snow. It's slowly melting but I may be done flying until March or April....
    However, I'm always threatening to go to south Utah on a road trip to do a little flying. Maybe this will be the year.
    The Edge is an excellent kit as you are all aware......
    It's gonna be fun. The Red Lion eingine looks awesome in it. We'll see how it performs with a pipe. I wasn't all that impressed with a can when I had it in the Sbach. It would turn about 6960 RPM with about 23.5lbs thrust with a 22x8 prop. My DLE turns 7050 RPM with a 23x8 and makes about 25.5 lbs thrust. Hopefully the tuned pipe will make the difference on the Red Lion. I'm anxious to try it. I'll definetly get it built and do a thrust test in my garage. That will be interesting.

    Yes,
    That's with a MTW tuned pipe. I think it's a RV2?????
    Anyways...I'm pretty satisfied with the power. Many others here claim over 30lbs thrust....but I never get that. Frankly...this is the best I've seen. I am up at least two lbs thrust with the tuned pipe. And the power is good....no torque or "pipey" issues. Very good transition. And much quieter than stock. I think this is a very good modification. At my altitude it really helps.
