Default Ohio R/C 87" Extra 300 Refurbishment

I was given an Ohio R/C Extra a while ago in need of some TLC. Well, I have the airplane mostly done and I was hoping to talk to some people who have one or have had one in the past. I would like to know overall flight characteristics and bad habits (if any). So far, I have completely stripped the airframe and disassembled the tailfeathers and control surfaces. I built new elevators from scratch, and cut a lot of extra wood out of the fuselage and canopy housing. I have completed the recover. I changed the landing gear to Graphtech carbon fiber, and added a set of their wheel pants also. I have purchased and installed an engine. I am currently cleaning and recutting the canopy and installing it. I have a new cowling on order from Fiberglass Specialties. All in all, I think it is turning out nice. Here are a couple of pics of how it was when I got it, and a little of the rebuild. I will post some more when I have more time.

Thanks. I hope to get a few more pics posted tonight. I have the engine mounted and new cowling cut and mounted and waiting on paint. After I get the cowl painted, all that will be left is radio gear. I would still like to talk to someone who has owned or flown one though.

Thanks for the compliments. I forgot to take some pics of it when I had it put together, but I did get a couple of my engine install. It turned out pretty good. I will get some of it all together soon.

I finally finished the exterior minus some possible decals. I only lack servos and receiver batteries to be ready to fly. I will have it ready when the flying season hits. Here are a couple of pics. I didn't have to make any cuts in the cowling for engine clearance. Now I just hope it gets proper cooling.

jetfixr,
You've done a good job. Don't you want your fuel tank located on the CG?

Ideally yes, but the way this airplane is designed, that would be impossible. It has a one piece wing, and what you can't see in the picture is the back end of the fuel tank actually buts up against the front of the wing when it is installed. It shouldn't really be a problem since this isn't a 3D aircraft. I also have a 50CC Wild Hare Edge, and the fuel tank on it is under the wing tube.

Looks great. Although if it were mine I would have do some engine cooling mods to the cowl.

Yeah, I thought about that. I will probably have to eventually, but I will do some testing like it is.

+1 to this. You do need a larger opening for cooling. It would be a pity have an unnecessary dead-stick.

BTW - I have one of these years ago, ran a 3W48B2. Good flyer.

Unfortunately I still haven't flown it yet. We are still covered up with snow here, and probably will be for another month and a half. I do have it completely ready to go though. All I need to do now is tune the engine and she will be ready. Good luck with your build. Feel free to post any pics or anything else you want here. I will give an update when I fly it.

That is a great looking plane! What brand is it? I have seen some people put skis on them up here, but I have never done it. Something about an Extra 300 on skis just doesn't look right. Congrats on the grass. The weather was pretty good for quite a while here until today. 6 fresh inches so far and still more to come. Oh well, summer will come eventually.
