Waconut, the gas caps were a bit of a fluke. when I was making the landing lights I went through about 150$ worth of small torches, well the back end of the torch ( the on/off end) is what I used to make the caps from. The torches came complete with battery's so I now have enough battery's to last the rest of my life.

Cleveland plans offers a plan for the S3Hd in 1/4 scale drawn by R.L. Tompson.

Does any one know about the quality of his plans ?

Angel,
One thing you have to watch about Cleveland plans is they will take a plane that was drawn at 1/12 or 1/8 scale and blow them up to 1/4 scale. This will leave you with very thick drawing lines. If they were drawn at 1/4 scale then everything may be alright. If you notice that they offer the plans in all different scales then I would be skeptical. I am not familiar with that designer so I cannot be of any help there.
Good Luck!!

Thank you Anthony.

I also sent an e mail to the AMA to see if they have the plans drawn by Claude MC cullough. He did an outstanding job on his.

Angel,

From what I understand, Claude did not make any formal, complete, detailed plans, just some rough building plans. I do not think the AMA or anyone has a copy of them.

The Cleveland plans are enlargements of a small rubber powered planes and the originals drawings have enhancements (enlaged tail feathers) for rubber flight which are also on the larger plans. The S3HD Plans also show a couple of locations for the stab (fuselage and fin mountings) and 3 fin and rudder profiles for the different "D" models (JHD, WHD, S3HD). It will also show the rubber powered nose button elnarged to 1/4 scale, rubber prop and the static Hamilton prop for display. The plans do have the formers and rib outlines. It would take a bit of work to redraw the plans to be used for 1/4 scale R/C but they could be used as a starting point.

FINALLY - got my Grimes retractable landing lights installed and operating. This video is hideous - but serves to show them in operation. My camera is very sound sensitive and would pick up a pin dropping in a boiler factory so turn your sound down if you watch this. The lights still have the paint mask on the lens to protect them, but still are quite bright. They are incandescent while the flying lights are LED's. Now to move on to other things. I've been stuck on these for months!!

kvlasblom,

Go to the Don Smith Cessna T-50 thread, post 345. rhsmrt50 has a mini "how to" on building a functional Grimes Retracting Landing Light in 1/5th scale. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10...14/key_/tm.htm There are also info for other lights such as cabin and marker lights. The information is spread out over a few pages but most entries have build pictures in them.

Boy Stickbuilder - As the Irish say -"You wouldn't jump as fast into my grave". Yes you will find most of the info there. Rich worked quite a lot with me to help me get these built. He has quite a number of good ideas and the site is worth perusing!

OK Stickbuilder - you can take it from here!!

love the landing lights, Supercub. I have one question. I am getting ready to mainden my waco so i have been watching all the video of the 1/5 ymf that i can get my hands on. I watched your maiden. It looked to me like it was extremely tail heavy. was this the case? Did you find the print cg to be in error? Currently my waco is balanced to the print cg location which required a 1.5 lb hunk of lead in the nose. Power is a saito 150.

Any input would be appreciated!

Bill,

I think SCM was refering to me, posting the link to the Cessna site for the Grimes light. I happened to be reading that thread and had just finished the bit about the light and had the reference at hand when SCMs post and kvlasblom asked about it so I posted the link. Lots of good info in that thread.

Hi Guys,
I put the band saw and disc sander to work. I have to say I am happy with the wood order.

It's not a Waco but it does have rag wings and a round engine Not bad for a weekends worth of work.

Hi, after looking at a couple of photos of the full size I decided to revisit the centre tank. Added another couple rows of rivets and turned up some smaller tank caps on the lathe.

I was able to attend Top Gun yesterday morning and saw Mitch fly...a great flight and plane. BTW I stopped by the Great Planes tent and saw the new Waco. What a beautiful plane. The covering was flawless and a very solid ARF. At only $480 they should sell many.

Dave must have tightened it up. I saw it up close and personal. It looked pretty good, but it still looked like a flyable bread sack. The covering was as wrinkled as my Uncle Abe.
