I need some advice before proceeding to make sure I have my head wrapped tightly enough to keep things in. I have been building a 33% Barth Waco and before I do some permanent gluing, I want the group to review my incidences since the instructions have said a positive or negative number with the description of the LE to TE relation contrary to my understanding. So please review ....

I am concerned about the amount of shimming I had to do on the stab and this is causing the angst I am dealing with. That said, I threw out the proposed way of leveling the fuse as I found that the top of the fuse crutch was not 0deg in relation to the lower wing. Since the lower wing incidence can not be altered, the lower wing as built would become my point of reference to all other incidences. So, I leveled the fuse out until I had 0 deg incidence on the lower wing (check). The upper wing was sitting in the center section cradle atop the fuse crutch and was at exactly -2 deg (LE lower than TE) as numerically specified to the lower wing (Check). The stab now required 3/8in of shimming on the front attachment block of the stab to set the +2 deg (LE higher than TE) as numerically specified to the lower wing (Check). Peter described 3-4mm, but I had to add 3/8in. A quick sanity check was a 4ft steel rule on the top of the fuse crutch proved that it was flat so no bows, dips or humps in the fuse. As stated, I found my version of the translated instructions stating a numerical incidence in opposition to the described incidence for both the upper wing and the horizontal stab. I feel confident in my setup as described, but asking a question and thought of as a fool is far better than doing something and removing all doubt.

bOB you must be very carful when determining the incidence on the top and bottom wings on the Barth Waco. You can not go by the centre sections because they do not give you the true incidence of the wings. You must have the outer panels inserted and measure your incidence from them . I was lucky that I had my tailplane adjustable because I ended up having about 4-5 degrees of positive incidence for nice flying characteristics . Hope this make sense to you, take a good look at the profile of the centre sections on their outer rib and compare this to the profile of the wing say half way out, you will find that they will produce a different incidence!

Hey guys, I'm new to the thread but have been following for some time now. I just got a Greatplanes Waco, wingspan 72 inches, weight 13 to 14 pounds. Kit requires a 20cc 4 stroke engine but I'm in Colorado so usually we need a little more power here in the summer months. I want to put an Evolution 735 radial engine on the front but have never used a radial engine before. The engine produces 2.2hp, weighs 3.1 pounds and swings an 18x8 and larger prop. I don't want a power house during flight, just a nice scale flying airplane. My question, will this engine/airframe combo work here in Colorado. Thanks in advance for your assistance and advice.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it! I've read the Evolution thread for over a week now and think the engine is good but needs attention after flights and during down time which I actually enjoy.

Guys I have been SLOWLY working on an old pica 1/6 waco that I picked up at an estate sale with some other planes about 3 years ago . It was heavy , ugly , in disrepair with a mouse nest in the tale end , but she stole my heart anyhow and here we are back at the restoration 3 years later ! I have stripped her of the cloth covering , fought the go up it was glued on with , replaced ribs ,formers , stringers , filled and reglued ALL joints I could reach , got rid of bell crank in wing , modified wing tips to look scale and had to take off tail assembly to re square it , repair cowl among other things I am sure I am forgetting about , lol . I have learned a lot from you guys , so I wanted to say thank you .

Just had a look at their web page and do not see the hinges that I refer to. I think we are looking at a different hinge, what I am chasing are alloy hinges in the style of the ROBART pin style hinge.

I wanted to go old school and use silk for covering but I am still not sure , the engine is a Saito 130 twin , a little big but I just cannot resist ! Lol

I was a bit disappointed with the old LED landing lights so replaced them with some CREE T6. A lot brighter so they may have a better affect in the day light,( I know you don't need lights for day time flying, but they just look cool !!!)

Will see if you can make sense of this; Pics show the ( BLACK ) torch that the CREE bulb and reflector came from, the silver torch is the source of the front cover and lens.

Good day all. After a very long hiatus (thanks ubl) I find myself having the time to build again. In 98 I built the 1/6 pica waco, ran a thunder tiger .91. Man it flew great. Crashed it at Mac hodges place showing off how slow they could fly...what a loss...and boy was that stupid. Never found the time again to fix it. Well, as fortune would have it, I scored a 1/5 kit, pre laser cut, on ebay. I cannot wait to get into it. This is a fantastic thread. Thanks for all of the insights.
