Hey Dirt.....
Congratulations on your 1/5 Waco find. Too bad about your crash. I'm sure most of us have a good "show-off" story or two. Bill (Stickbuilder) used to do the official introduction of new members but he may have delegated that to another guy. I'm sure you will be seeing something soon. In the meantime, welcome.

Rob is the name. Yep, I was showing off for my then pregnant wife. After several hot aerobatic planes, I figured I would dazzle her by flying backwards. Little breeze and some good rudder action. I got into trouble with some aileron input, tip stalled to the left, powered up and made it worse. Was only 5 to 10 feet up. Landed...ish... upsidedown.
I was surprised to find the kit. Makes me want to start looking for an ikon Mr mulligan. Who knows what still might be floating around.

So why did you start a new thread on the Waco?

My mis take, I took your "look forward to watching your build" in a different light.
Unpacked the kit, it looks all there except the rocker cover sheet, I recall the 1/6 had vacuum formed, not sure if this one uses wood...yet.

At the last auction I attended I got, among other things, A WACO cowling for the 1/6th and wheel pants which also seem to be WACO-like and are larger, so I assume for the 1/5th. The part numbers written on them match I forget which company's fiberglass catalog. I do not need the wheel pants and anything will be a net gain for me. The part number is 70. About 9 1/4" long by 2 3/4"-ish wide. Wheel opening is 4 7/8" x 2 1/4".

Bill, they are under the plans. I am missing the blisters though. Might go with a cowl through fiberglass specialties it they are still making parts. I have been looking at a 30cc twin gasser. On my last on I build up the firewall and did not use the integral beam mounts.
Also, at 18,914 posts, being able to search a specific theme is a bit more difficult than I first imagined.
Has anyone successfully used the Great Planes Cowl on a Pica kit. On the surface they look similar in both radius and depth. The pricepoint with dummy engine is less than an aftermarket cowl and a dummy insert.

Fiberglass Specialties doesn't have a cowl for the YMF. The cowl that they sell is for another model but fits the Pica Waco. If you choose to use it your model will be of the UMF which used the Continental 7 cylinder engine and thus has the paired blisters. Stan's Fibertech made some of the correct cowls for us using the plug that Jay (Damifino) built and sent to him. Stan's has been sold and at last check the new owner did not have the mold. Stan may still have it. Another source for the correct cowl would be Great Planes. Their Waco uses the correct cowl. Is it possible that they wound up with Stan's mold? If you use the Fiberglass Specialties wheel pants, you will need to remove 1/4" from the middle (longitudinally) because they are too wide. Removing the center section and glossing them together gets rid of the mold seam and all the voids that they supply in all their parts. There is a section that covers this too.

Rob,
I'm looking forward to following your build. I have the exact same kit, although I'm nowhere near ready to start building. Though I may not comment a lot, I'll be watching with great interest. Thanks for posting.

i don't know if anyone has used the GP cowl but in looking at the cowl I'd almost be willing to bet that it's the cowl that Stan used to make for us. The blister position and height is identical. I'd grab one from them and use it. Make your own dummy engine though we showed exactly how to do it and it looks better than the one from GP.

Bill I have the cowl that Stan made for us and one for the GP Waco. I'll get them and take some comparison pictures tomorrow.
Gents, thanks.
Mike, right now I am labeling parts with only that online scan. If you have the instructions, I would happily send you some form of liquid carbohydrate for a higher resolution image. I think I have found w 11, and am going to see about setting the dihedral on the main spar. Thankfully I built the 1/6 a while back and do remember some of the steps. This kit is die cut though, last one was laser. So, most of the night has been cutting parts out.
I am thinking the 30cc twin on hobby king. Seems to do ok if you replace the stock plugs....
Bottom wing cut out. Tomorrow will be sanding of ribs, sorting conduit for servo wires, and assembly....maybe.
Glue is there, had to rescue a few ribs that the wood split from age or mishandling.

Rob,
I assume you have seen, or are speaking of, mrhud's web page with revised documentation - http://mrdhud.wix.com/classicair#!
I also have scanned my manual and uploaded it to a DropBox folder for you, in addition to a compiled .pdf that I have which includes the revised documentation, along with plans and templates.

I hope this helps.

Mike, you are a scholar and a gentleman. That parts sheet is a lifesaver. The one I downloaded is nearly illegible. There were times last night when I thought I was taking crazy pills....
Now, time to go make sure my attempts to interpolate did not lead to mis labeled parts.

Dihedral is 3/4" at 20 3/4". Another great use for dtf...
Spar glued, pinned, and sanded. I always pin the spar to spar. Waste of wood to scarf, I thought.
Do the same for the front lower spar. You will need to widen the existing openings on the ribs, if yours is different. Also, the directions skip the trailing edge. I used the blocks to align, when I pull from the plans, I will then glue. Since I am running two wing servos, I thought the center section might be a good spot to put the battery. We will see. On my last one I had to add a bit of weight to the nose to get it to balance. The center may be too far back for the battery....

Thanks Dan. If they match it would explain why the new owner of Fibertech would say that they don't have the mold for our cowl. Doesn't explain what happened to the mold or to the plug that we provided to Brad that he used to make the mold. As many models that would use this same cowl like several Waco variants and the Cessna 195 both from Hostettleter plans as well as the ARF model just to name a couple I can't imagine them not being aware of this mold.
