WACO YMF
Well success at last! Three perfect landings with nothing bent. A small bounce on the first landing that in the past would have resulted in bent gear but not now, good to know that you can get away with not a perfect landing. The real trick is how you set the landing up, not too slow, close enough to you so as you can judge the correct ground clearance and as soon as the mains make contact release all pressure on the elevator, and in fact, push some down in. The mains are so far in front of the COG on this model that it makes for a lot of weight on tail, on landing the tail wants to come down hard after touch down and the introduced down elevator helps to ease this somewhat. If you want to run on the mains for a bit after touchdown it does take a lot of down elevator to keep the tail flying. Sorry did not have a camera available but will organise some vid next time out.

Dan, the wheel pants or as I call them- spats, will fit no problems, the tricky bit will be the extra cover that covers the transition of the strut to the wheel spats. I think that it will need some modification . Then we have the slider bit that goes from this cover to the main strut cover that allows for the telescoping of the leg. I may just use a non scale leather wrap to do this job. Will take a photo of the gear with the spats on latter today. I have also rearranged the tail wheel steering to a more scale set- up that will give better ground handling , the steering is connected to the rudder which means that when the tail wheel works under load it gets tighter not looser thus better ground handling.

Hey fella's
Been out of the hobby for nearly 25 years. A lot of things have changed. Biggest surprise came when I visited LHS and found the very few people build from sticks anymore. Well that is what I always enjoyed most about the hobby so I thought I'd try my hand at it again. I've purchased a YMF-3 1/6 scale pica kit and am looking forward to starting the build. Have always loved the Waco's and the YMF in particular. It might be awhile since we are in the middle of a move and I'll have a great shop area to work with once its stocked and put together. I'm sure there have been many modifications that have been done on these older kits and hope that I'm in the right place to get some good ideas and instructions. Haven't had the time to read this entire thread (who would over 18,000 posts) but what I have seen there are I'm sure some true experts here. Looking forward to advice and learning from all of you that have a ton of experience with this plane.
Best to all
Mike

a bit of a rough fit with the spats and covers.
You can see that one leg still has the slider attached and the other has it removed. If I was starting from scratch I would be able to make it all work with every thing that Peter supplies with the kit, but I cant be bothered with removing the gear again. I will go with the leg that has the slider removed and wrap some leather around to form the transition.

After 8.5 months of building, I just finished my build of the 1/6 th scale Pica Waco. What a journey it has been, as this is only the second kit I attempted to build. I wanted to try something a bit more challenging when I chose this one, and I sure haven't been disappointed. There were many times when I thought that this box of sticks would be turned into a box of firewood, but thanks too the help from this thread and the other one I posted for Mike, you guys came through for me. Here's a few pics. Certainly nothing as good as those posted by the master builders on this thread, but since it's a standoff scale model it doesn't look too bad if you "stand off" a bit to view it LOL!
Thanks again for all the help!
Joe

A big welcome to all of the newcomers, good to see that the interest in the Waco never appears to diminish!!!. Well now I wish that I had not cut the other slider off. You can DEFINATELY make all of the supplied parts work with the new landing gear. I will contact Peter Barth and see if it possible to purchase the slider part but I am guessing that I will have to purchase the whole cover that the slider is connected to in the moulding process.

I finally realized I will likely not get to building my Waco kit so I am open to selling it to a good home!

Astro, at one point I had my WACO up for sale about 3/4 the way through the build, bloody glad that no one responded immediately .I really love this plane and will build another one in the future and try for a lot more scale detail and for the first time ever may enter it in scale comps.
Take a deep breath, think hard, but only you can decide wether or not you would like to build it.
Beast Regards.

I'm getting close to finishing my CARF P-47 and I am hoping to maiden it this spring, then find a home (hopefully civilian) for the other 250 that currently resides on a round-cowl Pitts. I'd LOVE to find an Ag Cat sized for a Moki 150 or 250!!!
