first ever gas rc experience!!!!!
i am a mechanic and can listen to how an engine breaks in
so i am breakin in my first rc. an xl
we broke in about a tank with heavy fuel and lots of oil out the exhaust
i put a mark on the engine so i could tell when it is at bdc.
i set the engine at bdc everytime i shut it down
we got the engine at about 185 f.
did that about three of four times.
just deciced to get the engine temps up a little higher by running the truck.
i can controll the throttle so i only pushed it a couple of times. i didnt worry about the engine temps, i just shut it down and set it at bdc.
heres the deal. the breaks rock. the response is good since i havent even fine tuned it yet.
THIS TRUCK CAN DO SOME THINGS I DIDNT EXPECT. darn good thing i read up on things and understand what people say about throttle control!
this is just a statement that there is one more hooked fan out here.

Now you see why the truck almost* has its own forum dedicated to it, that is more active than most of the general forums
BTW 185 is kinda low for break in it should be around 240ish.
*I say almost for those 2-3 threads every few months asking about the other HPI trucks

hooked fan, HAHA. we're more like crack heads.
welcome to the addiction.
the savage is the best MT out there. only problem to watch for is half tank lean out. theres many threads and fixes for it. adding a header tank is the best, cheapest way to fix it. and you pick up 2 more ounces of fuel. some say they never have a problem with it, so get it broke in and see how it does
when you start tuning for power, make sure the engine has ran a few minutes and warmed up.
once tuned, she'll fly it will take massive beatings to and come back for more

RE: first ever gas rc experience!!!!!
i know that my temps were a little low.
i just went and ran it where i had a little room.
got the temps alittle high 285
im not worried though
shut it down and set it a bottom dead center again and called it a night.
however i had good blue smoke on the harder runs that i pulled.
i think i got my idle set up pretty good. i think the brakes are working a little to harsh.
all in all i am having fun!!!!!!!!
if i burn up the motor i will buy another one off ebay that somebody is selling.
if it decides to live i am gonna keep on beating on it.

RE: first ever gas rc experience!!!!!
i dont know what version it is.
its a savage xl with the 2.4 radio.
one thing i noticed is that the threads say to locktight down the motorplate. mine was already locktighted down. i reset the gear mesh to my likeing after i pulled the engine so i could pull the exhaust so i could mark the engine for an easy identification to bottom dead center. when i put it back in i set the mesh a little tighter than what was sent.
after i looked at the gears after the first rolling runs i did not notice anything other than a slight amount of metal wear on the insides of the teath on the spur gear.
i am talking about a very fine powder if anything. and it isnt much.
