Installed my diffs last weekend. They work great! Much more heavy duty than the stock diffs.

I am very pleased with my flux! Nice truck!

So what do you guys think is going to break next now that the diffs are solid?

Two questions regarding the new bulletproof diff sets:

1) What is the difference between the the heavy duty grease that comes with the set (#Z164) and the other HPI heavy duty grease you can buy (#Z162)? Is one better than the other? Does "heavy duty" mean 100k?
#Z164 - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...z164&search=Go
#Z162 - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXXJ61&P=7

2) On HPI's site, they recommend using the composite gear box / bulkhead set with the new bulletproof diffs... so should I go ahead and upgrade this at the same time or should I wait to see if mine breaks? Has anyone else seen a benefit in doing this?

The Z164 is the heavy duty black grease - 30000 Weight.

The Z162 is the heavy weight white grease - 100000 Weight.

that hpi diff case part you listed is the stock flux parts, which is also an upgrade for other savages. It's already in the flux.

Thanks t9dragon! They need to clearly print it somewhere on the tube or in the descriptions to let people know that. Is 100k weight always the way to go? That's what I hear most people are running.

Perfect!!! Thanks for answering this generis. It's nice knowing I don't have to buy another part.

I use silicone diff lock from ofna 50,000 wt, and I love it completely. I don't know how the grease would react differently from the silicone oil.... maybe that's comparable even though the numbers are different?

I use the grease between the bevel gears and pinion gears. Inside the diffs I use either Ofna or Traxxas diff fluids.

Also the manual has the wrong part number listed for the 4-gear Spider gears in the diff. The part # listed is for the old 2-gear diff.

HPI's website says it is "HEAVY DUTY GREASE (10G)". I am not sure what exactly the 10g means. But it is used on the Baja B5, so it might be thicker then the Z162 grease.

10g probably means its in a 10 gram tube...

That's correct... 10g stands for 10 grams:

t9dragon, sorry for the noobish question... but could you show pictures of what you greased compared to what you put the diff fluids in?

I just purchased all of the following in order to have everything I might need:
Ofna Silicone Diff-Lock Oil 120,000 Weight
Ofna Silicone Diff-Lock Oil 50,000 Weight
HPI Heavy Weight Grease #Z162 100,000 Weight
HPI Heavy Weight Grease #Z164 30,000 Weight
Associated Factory Team Green Slime

I know the slime is used for o-rings, not for the diffs, but I just listed that there since that was in my purchase.

Which silicone or grease do most people recommend and where?

I put the OFNA diff oil in the diff case on the gears and the grease on the bevel and pinion gears.

I would have to say that Diff fluid is better then grease because after a while the gears make voids and air pockets around them selves and your Diff just gets more open because of no resistance. With fluid the resistance is always there [sm=shades_smile.gif]

Ok, so fluid it is in the diffs... but which one? 120k or 50k? What difference will I notice?

t9dragon... I'm new to this... so what are the bevel and pinion gears? Are the located in the diff also or is that the gears that the motor connects to?

The small gear in the diff case is the pinion it connects to the driveshaft from the tranny, the bevel gear is the big black gear on the diff case. The gears inside the diff case are the spider gears.

Ok, now I can vision it much better, thanks for the explanation. So grease on both the bevel and pinion, and OFNA oil on the spider gears... got it.

Do you recommend 50 or 120k on the spider gears?
Do you recommend 30 or 100k on the bevel and pinion gears?

Lastly, If I put both grease and silicone in the differential case, it seems like they would splash and mix in together when the gears are all turning... correct?

Sorry for all the question, I just can't find a video on youtube for this or any good tuts.

You put the diff oil in the case and then put the bevel gear back on and seal it shut with the screws and then put the grease on the bevel and pinion gears.

Perfect, thanks! I haven't opened up the diff yet... hence all the questions regarding the layout. I'll let you know how it goes in about a week or so. Thanks again man.

Brake cleaner is safe on the diffs? Any brand or type you recommend? I'm guessing just pore it in and wipe it down until its dry... correct?

It comes in a spray can you just spray all the parts down to clean all the old grease off [sm=shades_smile.gif]

No need to wipe down dry afterward? And can I use just any ol' brake cleaner? Lastly, anything I should avoidgetting it on?
