well its not so much for my savage. more for my hyper 8 i guess.
just thought id ask in here as you guys seem quite clued up.

probably also depends on what body you are using.
i have a chevy cuda body that i know will melt a bit with some use.
bit of protection cant hurt.

kinda sucks when you spend your time painting a new body and it gets painted taken off
and melted bits from the exhaust rubbing.

ThunderbirdJunkie has wondered the same thing, but his bodies usually get too trashed before the area around the pipe has a chance to melt, so he hasn't worried about it.

Good thing to think about though if you're less reckless than he.

Perhaps the next round of Savage bodies will get this treatment

if your worried about melting around the exhaust? I didn't think it got that hot at the end of the muffler. my friend 4.6 you can touch the exhaust and not get burned, thats how he kills the engine.

The stock plastic pipe it's not so bad. Aftermarket pipes that actually WORK get HOT. That's why your engine runs cooler with an aftermarket pipe.

Your pipe is made of aluminum, which is an excellent conductor of heat. How is it that you think adding a very thin layer of the same material between the pipe and the body will reduce the heat transfer to the body?

You want a high temperature resistant insulating material, unless you plan to coat a large area with the aluminum tape, which would effectively form a heat sink.

Usually a heat tape has a thin layer of aluminum to reflect the heat off the area, and it is backed by an insulator, usually fiberglass.

When I upgraded to A THS pipe on my Savage LE The body started to melt a little.
I had alum duct tape Like the add on E-Bay and I placed several layers inside
the body and It Stopped the Melting. I also put several layers inside of the
roof and that has helped protect that area from the roll bar. I have the older
style aluminum roll bar. I have done these same mods to my sons Savage 25.
It really has helped save the body. I would recommend it. I actually keep
the roll in my traveling tool box for bashing.
The third picture is how the body melted before the tape. But
it has not melted anymore sense I added the tape. This is an old
savage 25 body that I run on my savage. I put the LE body away never used.

My pipe melted my body along with all the tears, rips, and pieces missing off it. Hmmm I thinks its time for a new body [sm=shades_smile.gif]

Sorry gotta say it, yes aluminum is a great heat sink, whein in direct contact with the heated item. When used in this application it makes an excellent heat DEFLECTOR. I use the stuff all the time on my street bikes when running full fairings that come close to the header and want to deflect the heat away from the plastic body part.

Yes, aluminum tape is an excellent IR (infrared radiation) reflector, but in this scenario, the pipe is in direct contact with the body, and thus the main mode of heat transfer is conduction. As I said before, this method will work only if you have enough tape surface area to form a heat sink.

we use aluminium tape at work when we are putting turbo conversions in cars or anwwhere else there could be a poss heat issue such as around plastic petrol tanks etc, if ur worried about heat coming through to ur body just double it up
