Your prop coming today? What muffler did you end up going with on your DLE?
I'm sold on my DLE 55, never would have thought a $360.00 dollar motor could run so sweet and produce so much power, your gonna love yours...
I hoping Sunday is nice enough to go flying, sure would like to get some more flights in on my Pitts before winter sets in...

I got her fired up, I primed it pretty good while I was gassing it up. The muffler came loose, no surprise as I didn't Locktite that yet. Also for some reason the choke servo at half throttle is dancing around. I need to get that figured out. Prop is a 22x10

My brother in law in Germany was watching via Skype, that is what my wife was talking about in Spanish.

Hi redbiscuits,

I am curious because I had some experience that loctite is not much good for muffler fixation.

I had a muffler become loose and leaking exhaust at the cylinder.
I put on some loctite, the blue one, and it still came loose.

By loose I mean that some gap developed. I do not mean that it fell off.
I attributed that the loctite is no good for hot temmperature of the cylinder.

I solved the situation by drilling through and using long enough bolts to install lock washers, regular nuts and added nylon self-locking nuts as well on the opposite side of the cylinder from the muffler.

I do not care about warrantee on the engines so I drilled through .

No more leakage and no more loose muffler.

What is everybody doing for retracts, robart drop in? I plan on modifying mine by replacing the air cylinder with the firgelli linear actuators. You can get them with a rc interface. You would have to program the end points like any other servo to prevent over drive shutoff.

Hey EJ, I wondered what happened to you, welcome back.
Out of the box I'm real happy how it ran this morning. The idle really impressed me, it took a lot of tinkering with my DLE30 to get a dependable idle in the begining. I finally ended up replacing the carb. Nice to not have to mess with this one.

Edwin, I'm keeping the Robarts as is. They have been aired up since Sunday and haven't lost any pressure.
I guess a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.

Thats a good phrase. My wife teaches english to foreigners at church to help them integrate and sometimes they go over slang. Its funny to hear what foreigners think when they hear it, they think of it as literal.

I was clearing off the bench to do a little house keeping after sheeting the bottom and I couldn't help myself, just had to put them together and have a beer whileI looked at her....I'm catching up to you Gary..............


I did do a clean job before moving on to the ailerons and flaps.. Here is a few pics of my little side cart I built a few months ago, I wanted to have something I could keep all the little stuff at the ready and be able to take it any where in the shop..... I still have to add a few things to it, but so far I really like it...

I sheeted the bottom as far as I can till I get me retracts in and started on the Ail. and flaps...


Anyone have this problem with the Aileron leading edge? In the last pic you can see it's not thick enough from the root out about 5" to where the wing starts tapering down.. Not a big deal, i will just add a scrap to it where it needs to be...

Agree with you mustang....camera is very hobby friendly...

Ready to sheet the bottom of my wing as well.
I stole your idea Gary on using 1/64 basswood for the wheel wells. Makes it nicer look and very sturdy, but unfortunately will be concealed most of the time with the gear up in flight or gear down on the ground but too low to see it.
Great detail nonetheless.
Some paranoia set in when I was building my wing.
I doubled the wing spars on both side and used 1/8 ply in the landing gear section and on both side of it.
I had so much trouble with my mustang, mind as well do it now that mess with it later.
Also laid some fiberglass in the landing gear bays and applied 30 min epoxy thinned with alcohol for a protective coating and stronger finish.

For those of you contemplating on using Robart wheels and tires.
They barely fit. I had to raise the maple mounts with 1/4 ply on the inboard side to give enough clearance for a positive up lock.
I will have to deal later with the strut covers (might have to bend them around the strut a bit) and the retract screws being almost flush with the sheeting.

Strange how the Top Flite web site under technical notes shows the same Robart gear but they seem to have it deeper than mine.
Once again a camera trick I must assume

You do my wheel wells like yours and i will buy you a big bag of fishy's...............

I was just down working on the ailerons and was planning how i wanted to do the wells, plan no more I say, I am so copying that chit it ain't even funny........ They look great, what did you use for the stringers, I see you mentioned 1/64 basswood, is that all they are sticking up, looks a bit more in the pic..

I went back and found the pics.. I ran out of Medium CA so a hobby shop run coming, have a pretty big list of things to pick up..

But out of the shop for now, gonna go flying tomorrow... A balmy 50 degrees with a wind of 2mph, should be a good time with the guys..........

It might be better to deal with it now. One thing you might try Fabio is to sheet the bottom of the wing with the gear and wheel retracted in the wheel well. After you get it sheeted then you can layup your gear doors on top of the sheeting, that will give you the shape that you will need. You might have to fiddle around with the sheeting a little to get it glued to the bottom ribs, maybe make some cap-strips in that area to shim the sheeting and give the wheel a little more clearance. Oh, and don't forget to protect that nice wheel from any glue that may drip onto it.

One good thing about the time change is I was out in the shop this morning at 4:30am. Coffee in hand, first cigar of the day, and mixing epoxy and micro balloons. I found myself thinking it doesn't get much better than this, almost Zen like. [&:]

I got the flaps and ailerons all glued in and sat and contemplated what I should do next. I should go to the flying field, but I'll probably end up finding more to do in the shop.

I know what you mean Gary, it's nice getting in the shop and getting stuff done before anyone even thinks about waking up...

I found myself down in the shop as well working on my ailerons, got them hinged andgot the 1/64 ply strips cut for the trailing edge of the wing.. It's working out pretty good, with exception of how I will fit the scale hinge blocks in.. It gets pretty dang narrow towards the tips, might just draw them on instead.. I guess I could bump all three inward a bit to make it easier, gonna play with it..

I guess I am in shop mode, decided not to go flying today.. I have to go out of town for a few days so i should spend some time with the wife and kids and the football games are on in a bit, no flying...

Got my ailerons about done, just waiting on some filler to dry.. The one pic is a toolI made to recessthe 1/64 ply, picked up the idea from another member.. It's nothing fancy, but it does a nice job...


I think i will start the flaps after dinner, something has been telling me that they are a pain in the rump.. least it looks like that in the book... quite a bit of work for control surfaces on this wing, glad I decided to get it knocked out...
